Kahuku, Kailua roll
The undefeated Red Raiders
By Pat Bigold
whip Kaimuki, 61-7, in
OIA quarterfinals
Star-BulletinThe toughest part of head coach Siukai Livai's job these days might be keeping his players focused.
His Kahuku High School Red Raiders, who have been ranked No. 18 in the USA Today poll for about a month, haven't experienced a close game since a 23-14 preseason victory over Morse High of San Diego in August.
Last night was no exception.
Unbeaten Red Conference champion Kahuku amassed 30 first downs while holding Kaimuki to four in a 61-7 victory in the Oahu Interscholastic Association quarterfinals at Aloha Stadium.
Kahuku's victory puts the Red Raiders in next Friday's semifinals against unbeaten White Conference champion Kailua.
Livai and Kailua head coach Darren Johnson served as assistant coaches at Kahuku under Doug Semones until Semones accepted an assistant coaching position with the University of Hawaii after the 1995 season.
Yesterday's loss was the first of the OIA season for the Blue Conference champion Bulldogs.
Kahuku did all of its damage without its premier running back, Red Conference rushing champion Talamoni Talamoni.
"He said he is all aching, but there is nothing wrong. He could've played," Livai said. "I just told him, 'Hey, take the day off.' "
Talamoni didn't dress for the game. Instead, Kahuku used five other running backs. They combined to rush for 308 yards and five touchdowns.
Dre Manumaleuna, Kaipo Fiatoa, Hekili Kahale, Kala Latuselu and Douglas Nawahine all figured in on the ground attack.
Nawahine was a prime example of Kahuku's depth at running back. He came into the game in the second half and carried 11 times for 104 yards.
The Red Raiders' passing game also clicked as Wayne Fonoimoana completing 12 of 15 passes for 246 yards. He also ran for a 46-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
Thomas "T.C." Thompson caught four passes for 146 yards and scored on receptions of 21 and 36 yards.

Kaimuki put up its only resistance in the first quarter when Tyrone Tausaga, who plays quarterback and defensive back, intercepted a Fonoimoana pass at his own 4 and ran it back to the 30.Moments later, he hit Craig Grant with a 65-yard pass inside the Kahuku 10. Several plays later, Tausaga threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Justin Faimealeiei for Kaimuki's only touchdown.
He capped off the Bulldogs' scoring by kicking the extra point to make it 14-7.
Fonoimoana threw to six receivers, including soft-handed 6-foot-3, 231-pound tight end William Sao.
"Big target. He's been a secret all year long, but he'll come loose," said Livai.
Fonoimoana said the Kahuku passing game is critical because it takes some pressure off Kahuku's running game. Thompson agreed.
"It makes the defense play more honest against us," said Thompson, who also competes in the 100 and 200 meters in spring track.

The Surfriders

punishing running game is
too much for Roosevelt
Special to the Star-BulletinAs it has all season long, undefeated Kailua followed its offensive line to victory.
Kailua rushed for 330 yards, 135 by Keone Brown, to beat a game Roosevelt squad, 37-14, in the Oahu Interscholastic Association quarterfinals.
"We still have not played perfect football," Kailua head coach Darren Johnson said. "But the kids stuck together to get the win."
The conservative Johnson mixed up his playbook a bit. He ran Rocky Alo and Keone Brown behind his entire offensive line rather than relying on off-tackle runs behind Keoki Fraser, which helped Kailua to the postseason.
Johnson's confidence in the right side of his line resulted in four runs over 25 yards, including a 57-yard touchdown run by Brown just before halftime to run the score to 20-7.
"Our offensive line still made too many mistakes," Johnson said. "But they played as a unit. Every one of them was outstanding."
The Surfriders gained the lead on their first possession, doing what they do best. Brown followed Fraser into the end zone to cap a nine-play, 88-yard drive.
The teams traded punts until the Surfriders stripped the ball from Roughrider quarterback Chad Kapanui.
Kailua linebacker Puna Maiava recovered the fumble, but couldn't advance it.
Surfrider quarterback Chico Cantiberos could, though, as he hooked up with John Kepa for a 68-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage.
Kepa beat his defender down the middle of the field and walked into the end zone.
Roosevelt's season ended because running back Paul Gusman could only carry the Roughriders so far. Gusman racked up 177 yards on 18 carries and scored both Roosevelt touchdowns, one on a 69-yard draw in which he outran the entire Kailua defense.
