quarterfinals set
Star-BulletinThe Oahu Interscholastic Association boys' and girls' volleyball playoffs move into the quarterfinals tomorrow with the top seeds facing last weekend's opening-round winners.
Roosevelt's girls, second-seeded in the East, lost their first two matches to Kahuku and Farrington but haven't lost since.
They face the fifth-seeded Governors at 1 p.m. at the McKinley High School gym. Farrington features powerful 5-foot-10 middle blocker Robynn Afe.
"Our strength is defense," said Governors girls' coach Jenic Tumaneng. "It helps us stay in games."
In the 10 a.m. match at McKinley, the East's top seed, Kaimuki, will meet Mililani.
In other matches at the same site, West No. 2 Moanalua will face Kaiser at 11 a.m., and defending OIA champion and West top seed Pearl City takes on Kahuku at noon.
On the boys' side at Moanalua High gym, Roosevelt, which rallied to beat Moanalua in a playoff opener last weekend, must take on West top seed and league champion Pearl City at noon.
"Pearl City is just a fundamentally sound, all-around team," said Rough Riders coach Kaui Mendonca.
Roosevelt derives experience from senior middle blocker Ryan Arisumi, and leadership from junior outside hitter Regan Ching.
In other boys' quarterfinals, East No. 2 seed Farrington will meet Nanakuli at 10 a.m.
The Governors are a senior-dominated team. Senior Joe Navarez, who plays opposite, was OIA East player of year last season. He gets a key assist from 6-foot outside hitter Jason Smith.
In other boys' matches, West No. 2 seed Waianae will face Kahuku at 11 a.m. and East top seed Kalaheo, led by Ryan Hogue, will meet Mililani at 1 p.m.
The semifinals will be held Nov. 4. The boys will play at Moanalua and the girls will play at McKinley.
The OIA championship will be held Nov. 7 at the Blaisdell Arena.
