Local groups will build a symbolic home out of canned goods
and household items to call attention to the homeless cause.

Canned goods
building blocks for hope

The Institute for Human Services, Inc., estimates that there are at least 2,061 homeless children in Hawaii, at an average age of 6.

To bring attention to their plight, the IHS is sponsoring "A Cornucopia of Hope for the Homeless" from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 14 at Pearlridge Center's Uptown Center Court. The event kicks off National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.

The highlight of the day's festivities will be the symbolic building of homes by school organizations, including the Key Clubs of Aiea, Mililani and Pearl City High Schools.

Donated items such as canned goods and household necessities such as toilet paper, laundry detergent, canned goods and packages of disposable diapers, will be used to build the homes. Members of the community are welcome to drop off more items. The homes will measure 4 feet wide by 5 feet high.

The homes will be judged on the best and most original use of donated items. Prizes for winning clubs will include cookies, CDs and Pearlridge gift certificates.

In addition, there will be entertainment by High Tide, Tenderoni, Ernest Chang and Friends and 96744.

For more information, call the IHS at 537-2724.
