"Atlas of Hawaii, Third Edition": Edited by Sonia P. and James O. Juvik, $49.95, 309 pages, University of Hawaii Press

This atlas has evolved into more than a book of maps. The third edition ties Hawaii's social culture with its geographical change. There are sections on Hawaii's wildlife, history, religion, languages, economy and more with color pictures to enhance the text.

"Green Mango Magic": Sylvie Hossack, $14, 128 pages, Avon Books

After losing her mother, Maile is left to live with her grandmother. She befriends a haole girl named Brooke, who Maile soon discovers has cancer, and through their friendship, Maile learns what courage and friendship really mean. For children ages 8-12.

"Jungle Dogs": Graham Salisbury, $15.95, 192 pages, Delacorte Press

Children ages 9-13 with older siblings will understand Boy's dilemma. Boy is afraid of the wild dogs that lurk along his paper route and it doesn't help that his big brother Damon calls him Sissyboy and jumps into Boy's battles at school. Boy is determined to show Damon that he is not a sissy and doesn't have to fight to win a battle.

"Kolea: The Story of the Pacific Golden Plover": Marion Coste, $14.95, 30 pages, University of Hawaii Press

Information on the black-eyed shorebird from its habitats and migration from Alaska to Hawaii to the impact they have had on the people of Hawaii.

"Moki the Gecko's Best Christmas Ever": Bruce Hale, $8.95, 32 pages, Words + Pictures Publishing Inc.

The lovable gecko is back to save Santa Claus and his reindeer from a mean Lone Shark after crash-landing in the Pacific.
