Treat pets with care at Halloween

Holidays can be a lot of fun for humans, but are often stressful for pets. While people will be getting into the fun of Halloween, dressing up and indulging in treats, their animal companions will need some special attention. The Hawaiian Humane Society suggests you ensure your pets' safety in these ways:

Bullet Keep your pets home in a safe and familiar place. Keep them away from trick or treaters, both for their safety and the children's.

Bullet Don't let animals have candy. Chocolate is especially dangerous and can be fatal to dogs. Call your veterinarian right away if you suspect Spot has eaten some chocolate.

Bullet Make sure your cats and dogs are wearing identification, whether collars or microchip I.D., in case you are separated.

For more information, call Eve Holt at the Humane Society, 946-2187, extension 212.

Books for newborns

Beginning on National Family Literacy Day Sunday, mothers of newborns statewide will receive a "Books for Newborns" packet, featuring "My First Little Mother Goose" book and a "Read to Me" baby T-shirt to encourage parents to read to their keiki.

Brain research has shown that reading aloud to a child increases his or her understanding of language and vocabulary, and builds a foundation for later learning.

The time spent together also increases the bond between parent and child. By encouraging parents to read to their infants, the Book for Newborns project aims to make reading an important part of each person's life.

The program will run three years. For more information, call Gloria King of Rotary District 5000, at 842-7757.
