UH women’s cross-country
team running in WAC meet

The University of Hawaii women's cross-country team competes tomorrow in the Western Athletic Conference Championships on the Rice campus at Houston.

All 16 WAC schools, headed by defending national champion Brigham Young, will participate in the women's five-kilometer race.

Hawaii is one of three league members without a men's team.

Running for the Wahine will be Lisa Davis, Jodi Enomoto, Kristina Liddell, Sadie Martin, Erin McNeil, Adrianne Mundy, Angela Ross and Sara Summer-Wolf.

Johnny Faerber is winding up his 26th season as the UH coach.

The Wahine's next meet will be the NCAA Regional on Nov. 14 at Fresno, Calif.

WALLACE, DONOVAN TO TALK DOLLARS: UH basketball coach Riley Wallace and associate athletic director Jim Donovan will take part in a panel discussion of "Sporting Dollars, as part of the Economic Growth Strategies for Hawaii," at the Hawaii Society of Corporate Planners monthly meeting Nov. 19 at the Hawaii Prince Hotel.

Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m., with the program to follow.

Cost is $22 for members, $28 for nonmembers.

U.S. LEADS JAPAN IN WRITERS CUP: The American team won three of four matches yesterday in the opening round of the 1998 Writers Cup Golf Challenge at Hapuna Golf Course on the Big Island.

Eight amateurs from each country are competing in the three-day Ryder Cup-format event and all are golf writers.

In yesterday's four-ball match play net matches, Greg Midland and Ted Blofsky, Mark Soltau and Bob Burns, and Ken Van Kampen and Ron Balicki won for the U.S. team.

Yoshio Shiobara and Kantaro Sakai teamed up for Japan's lone victory.

Alternate-shot matches were to be played today at Mauna Lani's Francis H. I'i Brown South Course.

The competition ends tomorrow at Hualalai Resort with eight individual matches.

UH-HILO GOLFERS AT STANFORD: Hawaii-Hilo will be the only non-NCAA Division I golf team in the 18-team Nelson Classic tomorrow through Sunday at Stanford.

Representing the Division II Vulcans will be Brandon Aoki, Shane Hoshino, Clinton Begay, Nathan Burks and Ken Nakano.

The host Cardinal is the defending team champion.

SWIM TRYOUTS: The Rainbow Aquatics Swim Team will hold tryouts for swimmers 8-17 years old Monday through Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Palolo Valley District Park pool.

TOYS FOR TOTS TENNIS: Entries are being accepted for the Toys for Tots Mixed Doubles Benefit Tennis Tournament at Pearl Harbor.

Organized by the U.S. Marine Corps, Toys for Tots collects and distributes toys to needy families during the holidays.

The tournament is open to the public and will feature mixed doubles play in Open, Seniors (age 50-and-up) and 7.0 divisions.

Enter by Nov. 7 for a $30 donation, which includes T-shirt, lunch and beverages.
