Scholarships and academic honors

These island residents or groups recently earned scholarships or academic recognition:

Elementary school students receiving one-year tuition scholarships to Lutheran High School of Hawaii were Ross Akiyama and Leslie Kunimura of St. Mark Lutheran School in Kaneohe; Cheryl Chung and Jason Bullock of Our Savior Lutheran School in Aiea; Kevin Young and Paris Helm of Messiah Lutheran School in Ewa Beach; and Wesley Kawachi and Claudia Lau of Our Redeemer Lutheran School in Honolulu.

Gov. Ben Cayetano, a 1968 graduate, has been honored as the 1998 UCLA Alumnus of the Year; and Edwin Carter, chairman of the USS Missouri Memorial Association, has been presented with the UCLA Alumni Association Award for Community Service. Carter is a 1948 graduate, and was president and chief executive officer of Bishop Trust Co. before retiring in 1993.

Jennifer E. Kessner, a Punahou graduate from Honolulu, has been awarded the Richard K. Liggitt Memorial Award for outstanding achievement in art history at Kenyon College in Ohio.

Sherrie M. Suzuki of Hawaii Baptist Academy won first place in a state-level competition in the 11th annual National Peace Essay Contest, sponsored by the United States Institute of Peace. She received a $750 college scholarship for her winning essay on "Cleansing the Wounds of War."

Winners of the 1998 Nissan Hawaii High School Hall of Honor were student athletes Jill Ono and Kirk Uejio of Iolani School; Endia Abrante, Kaiser; Ing Aleaga, Aiea; Brandy Choy Foo, Kailua; Bryan Clay, Castle; Jason Gesser, St. Louis; Kelly Kaaihili, Kamehameha; Aina Kohler, Lahainaluna; Mindy Marques, Waimea; Onaona Miller, Punahou; Alohalani Santiago, Baldwin. Each won a $2,000 scholarship.

Kerry V. Claypool Moen of Honolulu, formerly of Minnesota, has had a piece published in the 12th annual Bemidji State University anthology of women's writing, "Dust & Fire."

The Pacific and Asian Affairs Council has awarded its $1,000 Paul S. Honda Scholarship to Matthew Carr of Maui High School, Sarah Hall of Lahainaluna, Tamatoa Jonassen of Kahuku, Larissa Train of Sacred Hearts Academy, and Melissa Umali of Waianae. The Eddie Tangen Award of $100 was given to Kar Lai Ng of Roosevelt for writing an essay on the importance of being internationally aware.

Leah Kane of Honolulu has been selected as a Truman Scholar, one of 70 college juniors nationwide, and will receive $30,000 in funding for graduate school. She attends Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass.

Seattle University Freshman Trustee Scholarships of $7,500 per year have been awarded to Paul H. Shibuya of Aiea; Wendy A. Kimura, Eleele; Jill Mie Hatakenaka, Cassie-

Seattle Presidential Scholarships, merit-based awards of $10,500 per year for high school seniors, have been presented to Desiree G. Arelliano of Kaneohe; Mariko F. Kikawa, Keaau; Steven M. Nwe, Kyle Masao Nakamoto, Mililani; Corri Ann E. Fujikawa, Jaime Ann N. Katsutani, Honolulu.

Campion Scholarships, merit-based awards of $5,000 a year for high school seniors, have been given to Cheryl C. Rabago of Ewa Beach; Christy L. Chong, Hilo; Jana M. Catania, Mililani; Noelani D. Castillo, Summer W. Paniku, Honolulu.

Ralph C. Hook, an emeritus professor of marketing at the University of Hawaii at Manoa since 1968, has received the Educator of the Year Award from the Western Marketing Educators. He has served as dean of the College of Business Administration and chairman of the Marketing Department.

Hilo High School's five-member team, including Fong Chih, Drew Goya, Naomi Klein, Steven Okamoto and Aric West and coach Jeanette Wong, won the 1998 Hawaii Regional Science Bowl and participated in the U.S. Department of Energy's National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C.

The Charles R. Kendall Scholarship and Education Fund has awarded $1,500 scholarships to these HGEA members' dependents: Bess F. Kamikawa, Jason F. Knight, Grant K. Muranaka, Wendi N. Nagamine of Oahu; Hanauma I. Medeiros, Sherrie L. Singson of Maui; Brad J. Nakamura of Hawaii; and Jodi L. Nanbu of Kauai.

Recipients of the $500 scholarships are Nathan B. Bento, Joy Sakai of Hawaii; Jennifer E. Chan, Glenn P. Dela Cruz, Harmoney E. Mooney, Elaine K. Pahio, Andrew K. Won of Oahu; Kathleen M. Lordan, Lia K. Yamamoto of Maui; and Shanette K. Nakaahiki of Kauai.

Five recipients of the Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate Native Hawaiian Health Scholarships - Cathy Bell, Aaron Kauhane, Ron Martinson, Patrice Ming Tim Sing, Angela Po'omaihealani - attended the National Health Service Corps 25th anniversary conference in Washington, D.C. The conference addressed health care services to the poorest, least healthy and most isolated populations across the country.

A team of students from Pearl Ridge Elementary School in Aiea has been named one of 12 winners in the ninth annual national Kid Witness News video contest, sponsored by Panasonic. Megan Ito, Crystal Ishihara and their adviser Kathy Nagaji represented the school at a "Winners Weekend" in New Jersey and New York. This is the fourth time since 1992 that Pearl Ridge students have won.

Hannah Mendes and Clifton Tay of Kauai High School won the National Second Place Team Award in Hospitality Services Marketing at the 1998 National DECA Career Development Conference in Denver. They were among 17 delegates representing Hawaii, including Daniel Evans, Kahuku High; Hannah Mendes, Traci Nakahara, Patrick Sweeney, Clifton Tay, Kauai; Ji Yong Yi, McKinley; Nina Arevalo, Crystal Otsuji, Christopher Peterson, Mililani; Corri-Ann Fujikawa, Jaime Anne Katsutani, Moanalua; Jacqueline Danielson, Marcie Ishihara, Kyle Okamura, Brandon Yoshimoto, Pearl City; Jackie Krystoff, Roosevelt; and David Sato, Waipahu.

NaPueo, the student journal of Mid-Pacific Institute, won two first-place honors in the American Scholastic Press Association's annual newspaper awards, and won an Outstanding Service to the Community Award for an article written by Val Fujii. The staff also included Eric Polivka, Nat Kinney, Sterling Wong, Porsche Chun, Kent Ikeda, and Vivian Tanaka.

Radford High School was overall winner of the 1998 High School Arts Festival, showcasing Samoan cultural traditions, at the Polynesian Cultural Center, with Kaimuki coming in second, and Waianae third. Winners in other categories included Waipahu (Royal Court); Campbell and Castle (Speech); Radford (Musicians); Radford and Kahuku (Dance); Leilehua, Kahuku, Waipahu, Mililani, Farrington, and Aiea (Cultural Games).

Sara Atkinson of Konawaena High School and Erin Eno of Iao Intermediate School received $1,000 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards at Washington, D.C., for outstanding volunteer work.

Hector Butay, Joseph Vea, Lawrence Aragon and Mandy Morinaka of Mililani High's Home Economics Related Occupations Chapter, have won gold medals at the State Leadership Conference and represented Hawaii at the 1998 National Leadership Conference in New Orleans.

The Hawaii School Counseling Association has named Dole Middle School teacher Susan Ono its School Advocate of the Year; Kelly Monaco of Sacred Hearts Academy its Secondary School Counselor of the Year; and Ernest Pai of Holomua its Elementary School Counselor of the Year.

Milton Diamond, a University of Hawaii at Manoa Professor of Anatomy and Reproductive Biology, has received the Contribution to Sexual Science award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality. The award recognized his research last year on sex-reassigned individuals whose genitalia are deformed or damaged, which drew national attention. Director of the UH's Pacific Center for Sex and Society, Diamond was also elected president of the International Academy of Sex Research.

Women of Hawaii has presented its annual $1,000 Perpetual Junior Achievement Scholarships to Chelsea Kaku of Waiakea High School, Nazomi Kanoho of Hilo High, and Travis Abe of Pearl City High.

Val T. Iwashita, headmaster at Iolani School, has been elected to the board of directors of the National Association of Independent Schools.

Julie Kaomea Thirugnanam, a University of Hawaii at Manoa doctoral student, has received a Spencer Dissertation Fellowship for Research Related to Education.

Recipients of the 1998 Hawaii Mc Donald's Scholarships are Frederick V. Almogela and Marisa Galiza of Campbell High School; Raquel U. Chong, Castle; Kayde Duong, Roosevelt; Ivy Marie A. Elegino, Maui; Shandel Makalani Gallarde, Waipahu; Joy Juan, Waimea; Crystal Otsuji, Mililani; Owen M. Quon, Kamehameha; Matthew A. Taylor, Kahuku; and Joyce Keala of Baldwin was the $1,000 employee scholarship winner.

Jennifer Dela Cruz of Kauai High School has received the $1,500 1998 Jeffrey Kalima Loo Memorial Schlarship from the Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club. She plans to attend Healds Business College in Honolulu and major in hospitatlity and tourism.

Curtis Hiyane, band director at Mililani High School, has been inducted into the American School Band Directors' Association.

Grants and donations

First Hawaiian Bank has awarded $1,000 to the Maui AIDS Foundation to upgrade computer operations. The foundation also received support for its Youth Education initiatives through a $1,750 grant from the Hawaii Community Foundation and the Na 'Opio O Ke Ala Hoku Program to promote HIV and AIDS awareness.

The McInerny Foundation has given $5,000 to the Someone Special Foundation, a health and safety education program for children.

The Atherton Family Foundation has given $4,000 to the Friendly Isle United Way for projects benefiting the young, elderly, sick and disadvantaged on Molokai.

Winners at Work Inc. has received $10,000 from the McInerny Foundation; $7,500 from the Frear Eleemosynary Trust; and $7,500 from the G.N. Wilcox Trust. Winners provides job training for persons with disabilities through its statewide Ke Ala Holomua Program. The Sukamto Foundation Inc. also donated $2,500 for the program.

The Kmart Family Foundation has donated $10,000 to the Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawaii and will use the funds to implement its Strengthening Hawaii Families drug abuse prevention program on Oahu.

The Moiliili Community Center has received $4,200 from the Oahu Visitor Industry Charity Walk for the Children and Families Program; $10,000 from the McInerny Foundation for a bus for clients; and $10,000 from the Weinberg Foundation AIM Award for Excellence, recognizing executive director E. Rebecca Ryan for the Discover Moiliili Project.

Jessica Arita of Aiea and Brian R. Fern of Honolulu have received $1,000 scholarships from the World Floor Covering Association.

Lesley Ai Chan Lam of Honolulu, a junior at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, has been selected for the All-Academic Team of the New England Women's 8 Conference. One of 147 athletes to be chosen, Lam was selected for her outstanding performance in cross country and the classroom.

Traci Morita of Honolulu and Justin Sato of Kaneohe have received Taul Watanabe Scholarships at Willamette University in Oregon. Morita is a junior majoring in politics, who plans to attend law school. Sato is a junior majoring in chemistry. Both have been active in the Hawaii Club at Willamette.

Kerick G. Fujimura of Eleele and Jonathan O. Dowling of Honolulu have received scholarships from the University of Idaho for academic excellence, leadership and extracurricular activities.

Danyelle Alsadon of Kaunakakai, a sophomore at Colorado State University majoring in construction management, has received the Construction Management Diversity Scholarship. She is a 1996 graduate of Kamehameha Schools, a peer contact for Asian and Pacific American Student Services, and the luau chairperson for Hui O Hawaii, Colorado State's Hawaiian Club.
