Author discusses Nanking attack

In December 1937, the Japanese army looted and burned the city of Nanking, raping, torturing and murdering more than 300,000 of its citizens.

It took 60 years for much of the Western world to learn the extent of the brutality, as documented by California-based author Iris Chang in her best-selling 1997 book, "The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II.

The book is considered the definitive history of the event in the English language and received national and international attention.

The author will discuss the research behind her book, as well as her analysis of the event, in a talk Nov. 24 at the University of Hawaii Art Auditorium. The talk is free. Call 956-3836 for more information.

PREVIEW

Two movies open on Friday:

Bullet John Carpenter's Vampires: (R) A part-Western, part-horror flick, the picture centers on a vampire slayer on the Vatican payroll who's intent on destroying a 600-year-old master vampire before the already superhuman creature gets his hands on a secret weapon that will afford 24-hour mobility.

Bullet Permanent Midnight: (R) A jolting comedy-drama about narcotics addiction. Ben Stiller plays Jerry Stahl, a brooding Manhattan undergrounder who became the house hipster on the writing teams for TV series like "ALF" and "Moonlighting." We learn Stahl was "earning $5,000 a week and spending $6,000 a week on drugs." Close-ups of heroin injection and other drug activities will spook some audiences.
