Star-BulletinAt least 16 shots were fired at three motorists in two separate weekend incidents, which police are investigating as attempted murders.
No injuries were reported and the two cases do not appear to be related, said police Lt. Robert Naylor of the Criminal Investigation Division.
The first incident occurred Saturday night in Pawaa, involving a 25-year-old man known to police as a gang member. At least eight shots were fired at him during a car chase on Kaheka Street, police said, with three of the shots striking his car.
The second incident happened about 2:30 a.m. yesterday along Nimitz Highway in Kalihi, with shots allegedly fired at two cars, police said.
In this case, charges are pending against a 23-year-old Haleiwa man who was booked for two counts of attempted murder after being arrested at 5 a.m. yesterday in a Wahiawa parking lot.
He and another man were found in a black Chevrolet Suburban from which shots were allegedly fired at the two cars on Nimitz Highway, police said.
Investigators said two shots struck a car driven by a man, who had been involved in an earlier argument with the suspect. Six shots were later fired at another vehicle on Nimitz Highway and Puuhale Road.
Police have been unable to confirm reports that shots were fired from the Chevrolet Suburban at a third vehicle on Nimitz Highway.
A witness provided police with the license number of the vehicle, which police intend to search after obtaining a warrant.
In the Saturday night shooting and car chase on Kaheka Street, police said, three of at least eight shots fired hit the 25-year-old man's car.
While trying to flee, the man ran a red light, rammed a car at the intersection of Kaheka and Makaloa Street and fled. The woman driving the rammed car was not seriously injured, police said. Investigators classified the crash as an attempted murder, but said the woman may not pursue charges.
Police stopped the man's car on Beretania Street about 10:30 p.m. Saturday and brought him in for questioning about the shooting.
