Panasonic

Catch what’s new and
improved on HDTV

Just how clear can a television image get? Take a look at Panasonic's first Digital High-Definition TV, a 56-inch wide screen projection monitor, at the 34th Annual Food and New Products Show at the Blaisdell Center through Sunday.

The new PT-56WFX90, $5,500, not only displays the high clarity and detail of the new digital television broadcast format but will also enhance picture quality of today's standard programming.

(Only KITV4 broadcasts in digital in Hawaii; beginning Nov. 8, the station will start broadcasting "The Wonderful World of Disney" in HDTV. The program will look normal to those with traditional sets.)

To view digital programming on the 250-pound PT-56WFX90, the consumer must buy a DTV-certified set-top decoder, such as Panasonic's TU-DST50, $1,500, available here next month. The decoder converts the standard analog signal to the high-definition format.

HDTV achieves dazzling picture quality by allowing a precise digital convergence of the red, blue and green images that comprise TV images.

The new TV also has some unique features. You won't have to miss portions of your television program when you leave the room. A "Catch-Up" feature stores audio and video still pictures from a program in progress during your absence.

When you return, the television plays back the captured still pictures, with recorded audio, until it catches up with the program in progress. The TV then switches back to regular viewing mode.

There also are two tuners for picture-in-picture with split-screen display; a five-speaker surround sound system; and a Home Theater Remote Control with joystick controls for audio and video equipment.

Hours for the home show are 5 to 10:30 p.m. today, noon to 10:30 p.m. tomorrow and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is $3 for adults; $2.50 for 62 and older and kids 7-12; free for keiki under 7 with paying adult.
