United reduces fares for Christmas season
United Airlines has launched the annual Christmas special it has been running since 1984, offering discount fares to Hawaii residents to fill aircraft heading back to the mainland after they drop holiday visitors in the islands. While discount fares similar to United's "Mele Kalikimaka" special are available now for the holidays, those have time limits, and the special offers substantial bargains guaranteed for the holiday period, said Joe Hopkins, a United spokesman.
United fares are good for travel originating in Hawaii from Dec. 1 through Dec. 25 and returning Dec. 28 through Jan. 5. Sample round-trip fares are Honolulu-Chicago, $611; Honolulu-Washington DC, $680; and Honolulu to San Francisco or Los Angeles, $349.
The fares, slightly higher than last year's specials, were matched by several airlines.
