COLBERT-MURPHY TEAM PREVAILS: The team of Jim Colbert and Bob Murphy won yesterday's Gillette Tour Challenge at the Kaanapali Golf Course, a preliminary event to this weekend's $1 million EMC Kaanapali Classic.
Colbert and Murphy split $8,000. Jay Sigel and Hale Irwin were second.
Five two-man teams from the Senior PGA Tour played an alternate-shot format over six holes.
GEORGE FOX HAS HAWAIIAN PUNCH: Rachel Evans and Brandy Mailer of Hawaii are members of the George Fox (Ore.) University women's volleyball team that has set a school-record of 17 consecutive victories and is ranked 15th nationally among NAIA teams with an overall record of 19-1.
Evans, a senior from Kaneohe, and Mailer, a freshman from Honolulu, are graduates of Kamehameha Schools and Hawaii Baptist Academy, respectively.
JEEP BOWLS SPONSOR SCHOLARSHIP: High school students throughout the state will have a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship to Chaminade University in an essay contest sponsored by the Jeep Aloha Bowl/Jeep Oahu Bowl Christmas Football Classic Doubleheader.
Students in grades 9-12 are invited to submit 300- to 500-word essays on "The Role of Sports in a Good Education." The essays will be judged by professors in Chaminade's Communications and English departments and members of the athletic department.
In addition to the scholarship, the winner will receive four tickets to the Aloha and Oahu bowl games on Christmas Day, four invitations to the VIP Brunch at Aloha Stadium and a Chaminade Gift Pak.

SCENIC OFF-ROAD RUN: The Off-Road Challenge at Kualoa Ranch, a four-mile run on the floor of Kaaawa Valley, will be held Sunday, Nov. 1, starting at 7:30 a.m.
Proceeds from the event will support an academic scholarship program at UH-Manoa known as the "Run for Higher Education Scholarship."
