Tom Lutgen heads the Business Research Library at the Maui Research and Technology Center. The library provides free information statewide to small-business owners or those contemplating starting a business.

"We focus on high-tech, motion-picture production and diversified agriculture," Lutgen said.

"Right now, there is considerable interest in organic farming and health-food stores."

He has 28 years in library research and most recently was library director at the Los Angeles Times. Lutgen also worked in economic research for the City of Commerce and Santa Ana public libraries.

Lutgen earned a bachelor's degree in psychology at the University of California at Riverside and a master's degree in library science from the University of Southern California.
