Playing their third match in four days, the Hawaii women's soccer team stopped Cal Lutheran, 3-0, in a nonconference game at the UH field yesterday.

The Wahine (9-6) scored twice in the first twenty minutes, which allowed UH head coach Pinsoom Tenzing to substitute frequently. From his sideline vantage point, that was the only good thing about the match.

"We played atrociously. Mentally we were not there," Tenzing said. "If we play like that this weekend (in two league matches), we're in serious trouble."

Then, after a moment, he said. "We should be fine. We get up for the big games."

But Tenzing wasn't about to forget yesterday's match just yet.

"This is a time when you show what you want to do in an actual game situation under high pressure. It's difficult to play good soccer under pressure. That's just a given."

For most of the Wahine, having a day off today may be just the tonic needed to get focused for San Jose State and Fresno State this weekend.

"Everyone is just tired and sore. Tomorrow's rest will be good enough for us to gear up for the weekend," said junior defender Camille Kalama.

"If it (the energy) seemed any less than usual out there, we haven't had a break since the last road trip," freshman defender Erin Schremser said. "We came into today just trying to keep the winning streak going."

The first goal was the result of some finesse teamwork. Tricia Nishikawa controlled a high ball on the left side and found Megan Lytle with a soft back pass. Lytle returned the favor with a touch pass as Nishikawa broke toward the middle of the field.

Dawn Dasher was open for Nishikawa's through ball and redirected it into the lower right corner of the net at 13:50 for her fifth goal of the season.

Tui Moe took advantage of a loose ball inside the penalty box to score her third goal this year at 19:15. The substitution parade began soon after.

Nikki Kamakura got her third goal of the season 15 minutes into the second after receiving a pass from Malia Beter, who intercepted a clearing ball from a Cal Lutheran (10-4) defender.

KEOHEN RETURNS: Freshman midfielder Kelly Keohen was itching to get back into action all weekend, but didn't make her return until yesterday. That's after she received medical clearance after coming down with the chicken pox on the last road trip.

UP NEXT: When the Wahine hit the practice field tomorrow, they will be focusing on San Jose State's and Fresno State's impact players. UH needs wins Friday against the Spartans and Sunday vs. the Bulldogs to stay alive in the Western Athletic Conference postseason tournament race.

Sanchez out for season

Goalkeeper Demarre San-chez will be lost to the Hawaii women's soccer for the remainder of the 1998 season with a fractured right ankle.

The 5-foot-8 sophomore from Albuquerque, N.M., suffered the injury while clearing a high cross in the 77th minute of Sunday night's victory over Nevada-Las Vegas.

She was examined by Dr. Allen Richardson yesterday.

"He said it was going to take six to eight weeks to heal," said Sanchez, who was wearing a walking cast and using crutches yesterday.

Sanchez finishes the season with an average of 1.52 goals allowed per match and 57 saves.

Junior Amanda Paterson, in her final season of eligibility, recorded her fifth career shutout yesterday, but plays on a right leg that is gimpy from five knee surgeries.

She knew she would have to play in pain this season.

"The only thing that's changed is I'm used to it," Paterson said. "It doesn't hurt during the game, but after. I'll probably need another operation after the season, then I'll give give it a good, long rest."

Freshman striker Veronica Flores and sophomore midfielder Megan Lytle already have worked in the goal in case there is another emergency this season.
