Gov. Ben Cayetano has criticized GOP challenger Linda Lingle for saying she might not pursue the state's lawsuits against major oil companies for allegedly inflating gasoline costs in the islands. Cayetano rips Lingle
stance on oil lawsuitsLingle has told the Star-Bulletin she would study the potential costs of the lawsuit and would not automatically press the legal challenge if she is elected. All the costs of pursuing the legal action have not been explored, she said.
Cayetano blasted Lingle's remarks as "a typical Republican position -- support business at all costs." He added that "if she cancels the suit, the real losers will be Hawaii's consumers."
The lawsuit was brought by a San Francisco law firm on behalf of the state under a contingency basis, which means the lawyers don't get paid if they lose the case.
