Waipahu
stops Campbell
Cane Knife Classic
By Jerry Campany
came down to last-minute,
goal-to-go play
Special to the Star-BulletinCampbell came within the length of a cane knife of winning its first game.
The Sabers drove down the field to the goal line with under a minute to play, but failed to punch the ball in and lost to Waipahu, 19-13, in the Cane Knife Classic in Oahu Interscholastic Red Conference action at Campbell last night.
"Campbell did a great job driving inside the five," Marauder head coach Sam Delos Reyes said. "But we had a great goal-line stand left in us."
Waipahu linebacker Ioane Lepisi took over the game on the final four plays, stuffing the run. On the Sabers' final play, Isaiah Maikui tried to vault over the offensive line from the 1, only to be met by Lepisi and a host of others.
Waipahu got on the board first when Lepisi stepped in front of a Keala Noda pass at the 30 yard-line and waltzed into the endzone untouched. Noda started the game at quarterback because regular quarterback Vincent Lemau missed a practice earlier in the week to study in the library. Team rules forbid him from playing the first quarter, and it would loom big in the close game.
Lemau hooked up on a 61-yard touchdown pass to Noda on his first throw of the second quarter.
Maikui's 10-yard run gave Campbell a 13-7 lead in the third quarter but Waipahu quarterback Nefu Mageo capped a seven-play, 89-yard drive by hitting Chaz Ramos on a crossing pattern for a 22-yard score to tie the game.
Campbell defensive back Chad Demello blocked the extra point try with 3:55 to play.
On the next play from scrimmage, Ramos picked off Lemau and scampered down the left sideline to give Waipahu a 19-13 lead.
