If Iolani's Joe Igber needed to legitimize his talent, he did last night in a bizarre 77-42 shootout loss to St. Louis at Aloha Stadium.

The 5-foot-7, 190-pound 1997 offensive player of the year rushed 23 times for 204 yards against the 12-time defending Interscholastic League of Honolulu champions' premier defense.

The Crusaders, who suited 77 of their 88 roster players for the second week in a row, are now 1-0 in the ILH second round and 5-1 overall in the league season. Iolani is 0-1 and 3-3 overall.

Igber's 30-yard touchdown run with just under five minutes left in the first half tied former St. Louis star George Ornellas for the all-time state career touchdown record at 45.

His presence in the Raiders' offense also took some defensive pressure off quarterback Brent Wong, who completed seven of his first eight passes for 125 yards and three touchdowns in the first quarter as Iolani took a brief 21-14 lead.

No team had scored 42 points against a St. Louis team since 1960, when Punahou defeated the Crusaders, 42-16.

St. Louis' Timmy Chang completed 16 of 20 passes for 405 yards and an ILH record six touchdown passes to lead the Crusaders' rally.

Igber's 48 yards in the first quarter alone was three more than St. Louis' rush defense had averaged in its previous four games.

His 210 yards of total offense was just four under what St. Louis' defense has averaged this year.

Igber broke the state career rushing record last weekend against Damien and now has 3,670 career yards. He has 1,215 yards this season and is now 810 yards shy of former Kahuku star Mark Atuaia's single-season state record of 2,025.

He is averaging 207 yards per game.

All-state junior slotback Gerald Welch had six catches for 138 yards and scored twice on tackle-busting plays of 27 and 42 yards.

St. Louis led Iolani by only a touchdown, 42-35, at the half and the Raiders remained within two scores (56-42) at the end of the third quarter.

But Enoch McKeague's 55-yard interception return one minute into the fourth quarter gave St. Louis a comfortable 63-42 lead.
