Midnight Ohana
By Cindy Luis
a throwback
Star-BulletinGroovy, man.
In the Basketball Hall of Fame, the jersey of Hawaii's Tom Henderson hangs in a trophy case. It's a wild floral print, one that caused the NCAA to rewrite its uniform guidelines.
It will be back to the '70s tonight as the University of Hawaii celebrates the opening of basketball practice for its men's and women's teams. "Retro Ohana" starts at 9 p.m. with carnival games on the Stan Sheriff Center concourse and a three-ring circus on the court at 12:01 a.m.
Rainbow center Erin "The Helicopter" Galloway is scheduled to arrive before the introductions via -- what else -- a helicopter. The maneuver required FAA approval and that of Galloway's -- the 6-foot-8 center is afraid of heights.
The Rainbows and Wahine will square off in a 3-point shooting contest that Wahine senior BJ Itoman is favored to win. Newcomer Geremy Robinson, a 6-4 guard with a 43-inch vertical jump, is expected to challenge defending champ Galloway for the dunk title.
During the evening, Hawaii will recognize its basketball past, introducing players from every era. After midnight, it belongs to the teams of 1998.
KHON-TV's Bob Hogue is the honorary coach of the Rainbow Green team while the Star-Bulletin's Paul Arnett will help coach the White Team. The men's scrimmage caps the early morning festivities that will include a 3-point shooting contest at halftime for a tuition waiver next spring semester.
