Orlowski's 36-hole total of 149 led a contingent of nine Aloha Section PGA players, six of whom were among 60 golfers unable to complete their rounds yesterday after morning snowfall delayed play for more than three hours.
Kevin Hayashi of Hilo shot a 74 and was at 150. David Chin of Aiea had a 79 for a 161 total.
WAC DEFECTORS NAME COMMISSIONER: Craig Thompson, who has been commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference for eight seasons, will head the new league created by eight schools leaving the Western Athletic Conference.
The announcement yesterday was made by Albert Yates, president of Colorado State, which is joining Air Force, Wyoming, Utah, San Diego State, New Mexico, Nevada-Las Vegas and Brigham Young in the new conference.
SEA WARRIORS WIN: At Billings, Mont., Hai Yan Wang put down a match-high 22 kills and Debbie Sant'Anna added 12 kills and five aces as the No. 6 Hawaii Pacific women's volleyball team defeated Montana State-Billings, 15-10, 15-7, 10-15, 15-4, last night at Alterowitz Gym.
The Pacific West Conference victory pushed the Sea Warriors to 18-1 overall and 10-1 in conference. The Yellowjacks fell to 10-15 and 2-5.
It was HPU's 12th straight win since its lone loss to top-ranked BYU-Hawaii.
TENNIS SWEEP FOR UH WOMEN: Hawaii swept an intercollegiate women's tennis match with San Francisco, 9-0, yesterday at the San Francisco City College courts. Nina Wenger, Nalani Cruz, Silvia Ricote, Sofia Hoglund, Georgina Sesto and Petra Holma were singles and doubles winners for the Wahine.
AMERICA'S CUP CHALLENGE BLESSING: Aloha Racing, the Waikiki Yacht Club's America's Cup Challenge, will host a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony of the team's construction facility at the Barbers Point Deep Draft Harbor Monday at noon.
The blessing will be conducted by Kamehameha Schools Pastor Curtis Kekina Young.
Construction will begin next month at the state-owned site on the team's first International America's Cup Class yacht. It will be the first America's Cup yacht ever built in Hawaii.
SURF ON HOLD: Small surf put the Rio Marathon Surf International on hold yesterday, halting the second round of competition at Barra Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Hawaii's Shane Dorian, Sunny Garcia, Derek Ho, Kaipo Jaquias and Andy Irons were to compete in the second round.
John Shimooka, 23rd on the WCT rankings, won his first-round heat Wednesday and advanced to the third round.
"This is a big event and I need to do well here to qualify for next year's WCT," said Shimooka. "Just by making it through to the third round should give me enough points to qualify but I want to go all the way."
In the women's division, Hawaii's Rochelle Ballard and Megan Abubo lost their first-round heats and will try again in round two.
BASKETBALL ON WHEELS: The 11th Able-Bodied Wheelchair Basketball Tournament will be held tomorrow at the Naval Air Station, Barbers Point Gymnasium, Building 19, with single-elimination play beginning at 8:30 a.m.
The tournament is part of the observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, with all proceeds to be donated to Wheelchair Sports Hawaii, a nonprofit organization.
