Catch deep-sea
view of Kilauea

Right now in the deep blue waters off the Big Island University of Hawaii, scientists are preparing to explore the underwater beginings of Hawaii's most active volcano.

You can follow along the voyage to Puna Ridge as the scientists drop remote sensing equipment and cameras down Kilauea's east flank at a depth of 5,400 meters.

The volcano has been erupting since January 1983, but in the ocean, eruptions have built a ridge 75 kilometers from shore, which is now the focus of a specif expedition.

The site, http://www.punaridge.org, includes daily updates.

The Web site is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the state Department of Education and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
