BYU-Hawaii wins
53rd straight

SILVER CITY, N.M. -- It took 65 minutes for the top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii women's volleyball team to break a two-year old record.

Last night, the Seasiders blew out Western New Mexico, 15-3, 15-5, 15-6, for their 53rd consecutive victory. The Pacific West Conference victory broke the school mark of 52 set between Sept. 22, 1995 and Dec. 5, 1996.

Sophomore outside hitter Vanessa Valansi led BYUH with 13 kills and 11 digs. All-American Arlete Silva, named the Division II National Player of the Week, added 12 kills.

The Seasiders improved to 17-0 overall, 12-0 in PacWest. BYUH's next game is against Chaminade on Saturday.

HPU ROLLS, TOO: At Billings, Mont., Hai Yan Wang put down 14 kills to lead No. 6 Hawaii Pacific to a 15-5, 15-3, 15-6 women's volleyball victory over Montana State-Billings last night.

The Sea Warriors needed just 66 minutes to improve to 17-1 and 10-1. The teams meet again today.

VULCANS WIN: At Fairbanks, Alaska, Ginelle Palau recorded match highs of 26 kills and 19 digs to lead the Hawaii-Hilo women's volleyball team to a 15-9, 11-15, 8-15, 15-5, 15-13 win over Alaska-Fairbanks last night.

Heather Cambell added 19 kills and was in on eight blocks for the Vulcans (8-8), who lost in five on Tuesday night to Alaska-Anchorage.

HAWAII GOLFERS ADVANCE: Nine Hawaii golfers move into second-round play in the Western PGA Club Professional Championship at Sunriver Resort's Crosswater Club in Oregon.

Waianae's Tommy Hines led the local field with a 75 (3 over par). Kevin Hayashi from Hilo followed with a 76, with Mark Chapleski from Kapolei and Brendan Moynahan from Kapalua right behind at 77.

The 120-player field will be trimmed to the low 70 scorers and ties following today's round. The low 28 scorers after the final round on Saturday will earn a berth in the 32nd PGA Club Professional Championships in June.

SONY OPEN VOLUNTEERS: The Sony Open in Hawaii golf tournament, to be played in January at the Waialae Country Club, is seeking additional volunteers.

Caddies, standard bearers, score keepers or markers, marshals, admission takers and transportation drivers are needed, according to volunteer chairman Jim Kometani. Also needed are volunteers with Japanese language skills.

HARLEQUINS RUGBY FEST: Top Rugby clubs from around the world will compete this weekend in the 28th Budweiser Hawaii Harlequins International Tournament at Kapiolani Park.

The Hawaii 7-side tournament will be played all day tomorrow and 15-side matches played Saturday and Sunday. Matches run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

Among the teams entered are Gordon Rugby Club of Australia, Belmont Shores of California, the host Hawaii Harlequins, the Hawaii Marines, Hawaii Lightning and the Hawaii Rainbows.
