set for Kauai courseTiger Woods will headline the PGA Grand Slam field Nov. 17-18 that will also include Mark O'Meara, winner of the Masters and the British Open, PGA Champion Vijay Singh and U.S. Open winner Lee Janzen.
Michael Castillo, Poipu Bay Resort's head golf professional, said PGA of America, which signed a seven-year contract with Turner Sports to continue the Grand Slam, has committed to hold the event at Poipu Bay through next year.
It will be the fifth year in a row that the $1 million Grand Slam will be held at the Kauai resort course. But this year's event will be in a match-play format for the first time, unlike the 36-hole stroke play in previous years.
Woods, the leading alternate based on finishes in this year's four majors, will meet Janzen and O'Meara will take on Singh in the opening 18-hole matches. The first match will start at 9 a.m., the second 20 minutes later.
The winners will play for the $400,000 top prize the following day with the losers meeting for third place.
WAHINE STAY 10TH: A loss to No. 5 Brigham Young last weekend didn't hurt the Hawaii women's volleyball team.
The Wahine (12-2) remained in the No. 10 spot in the AVCA/USA Today poll. There was no change among the top 17 teams with Long Beach State staying at No. 1 followed by Penn State, Nebraska and UC Santa Barbara.
Hawaii goes back on the road for a WAC match at San Diego State Saturday and a nonconference meeting with the University of San Diego next Monday.
KAHUKU IN NATIONAL TOP 20: Kahuku remains Hawaii's only nationally ranked prep football team.
The USA Today "Super 25" poll has the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference champion Red Raiders (6-0, 8-0 overall) at No. 18 in the country and No. 3 in the West Region.
UH GOLFERS FINISH 10TH: Hawaii finished 10th in the 13-team Northwest Classic women's golf tournament at Corvallis, Ore., Tuesday while Angie Park and Linda Appelblad of the Wahine shared 37th place in the individual competition.
Appelblad shot a 4-over-par 76 and Park a 77 in the final round for 54-hole totals of 237.
Washington took the team title and Pepperdine's Tamie Durdin won a playoff for the individual crown with the Huskies' Kelli Kamimura after both finished at 213.
POWERS, COOPER RULE WAVES: Roy Powers captured the open men, explorer men and explorer junior titles in last weekend's National Scholastic Surfing Association meet on Kauai.
Jesse Cooper also was a triple winner, in the open bodyboard, junior bodyboard and drop knee bodyboard divisions.
