ILH to get third berth
in state basketball
tournament

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu will get a third berth in the Hawaii High School Athletic Association basketball tournament starting next year, under a new formula.

The ILH, which is generally considered the state's strongest basketball league, has only been awarded two tournament slots in previous years.

BYU-HAWAII, HPU CRUISE: At Ellensburg, Wash., top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii and No. 7 Hawaii Pacific took turns beating up on teams from the other division yesterday at the Pacific West Conference Crossover Tournament.

The Seasiders (13-0, 8-0) ran their winning streak to 49 straight after thrashing host Central Washington, 15-1, 15-2, 15-3, and Humboldt State, 15-4, 15-7, 15-0. BYUH had just 25 kills against the Wildcats but countered with 14 blocks and 8 aces. Against the Lumberjacks, Arlete Silva had 12 kills and 13 digs.

HPU (14-1, 7-1) was equally successful in winning its eighth straight, running over Western Oregon, 15-9, 15-3, 15-7, and Lewis-Clark State, 15-9, 15-9, 15-4. Debbie Sant'Anna had 18 kills with no errors against the Wildcats while Hia Yan Wang put down 17 kills in the win over L-C State.

Chaminade split its matches, defeating Central Washington, 9-15, 15-7, 15-6, 15-4 but losing to Humboldt State, 4-15, 15-12, 8-15, 15-11, 15-13.

Hawaii-Hilo lost both its matches. The Vulcans fell to Western Oregon, 10-15, 15-17, 15-3, 15-4, 15-7, and to Lewis-Clark State, 15-13, 15-13, 10-15, 16-14.

The tournament concludes today with two more matches for each team.

UH CONTRACTS EXTENDED: The University of Hawaii Board of Regents yesterday approved extensions for three coaches.

Women's basketball coach Vince Goo received a five-year extension through April 2003. Women's softball coach Bob Coolen and water polo coach Sherry Smart were both given three-year extensions through June of 2001.

QB CLUB: Monday's speakers at the weekly luncheon of the Honolulu Quarterback Club are sprinter Kelsey Nakanelua, KFVE college basketball analyst Artie Wilson and Rainbow football coach Fred vonAppen.

Lunch at the Pagoda Restaurant is served at 11:30 a.m. The program starts at noon. The public is invited.

SEASIDERS ADVANCE: At San Diego, the Brigham Young-Hawaii tennis teams will have two players in today's semifinals in both the men's and women's competition at the Rolex Championships.

Petra Gaspar and Karin Ptaszek advanced via quarterfinal victories while Helena Nordwall lost her quarterfinal match. In men's singles, Wei-Yu Su and Toshi Matsui advanced but Jacob Nordwall was eliminated in the third round.

In women's doubles, Gaspar and Ptaszek take on Cal State-Bakersfield's Regina Csibi and Barbara Valkova in today's final. Yu and Matsui were ousted from men's doubles play.
