Making the best of time

Luk Ki Lam thinks there aren't enough minutes in a day.

"I just don't want to sleep," said the McKinley High senior. "I think it's wasting time to sleep."

Instead, Lam relishes time spent with fellow members of various clubs and organizations. Teamwork, said Lam, is the best use of her time. "I enjoy doing teamwork. It's so fun, really challenging....It's fun to work with others."

A busy student, Lam is co-captain of the Math Club, treasurer of the Physics Club, vice president of the Art Club, secretary of the Computer Club and a member of the Science Bowl, National Honor Society and tennis team. She also has a 3.974 cumulative grade-point average and takes calculus at the University of Hawaii-Manoa.

Lam said she's driven to succeed, studying at least four hours a night and hitting the sheets about 11 p.m., which she describes as "so early."

Her schedule differs greatly from that of three years ago, when her family arrived in Hawaii from Hong Kong. Lam said she knew no one and couldn't communicate in English, which she speaks well now.

Lam said she will return to Hong Kong one day but doesn't know if it will be her permanent home. Her goal is to attend either UCLA or the University of California at Berkeley to study civil engineering.

"It's challenging work, and working with others is good."
