Kometani misses cut
at LPGA school tourney

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Pam Kometani shot a third-round 73 but missed the cut by one stroke for the final day of play at the LPGA's Final Qualifying School tournament yesterday.

Kometani had a three-round total of 7-over-par 223.

Nicole Horner (74--228), Julie Miyagi (74--229) and Christel Tomori (79--231) also missed the cut.

METZGER, YOUNG COMPETE IN CUERVO: Hawaii residents Stein Metzger and Lia Young will compete in the Cuervo Gold Beach Volleyball Tour Championship on Oct. 24-25 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Metzger, a former Punahou standout and All-American at UCLA, will team up with Al Hannemann, a top player on the AVP circuit , for the $7,000 first-place prize.

Metzger was part of the team that finished second at the Cuervo regional championship held in Honolulu last month. Young was a member of the women's winning squad.

IGBER, LAUBACH HONORED: Iolani's Joe Igber and Brigham Young-Hawaii's Becky Laubach were named the Honolulu Quarterback Club's Sportspersons of the Month.

Igber, a 5-7 senior running back, is on pace to break the state high school rushing record. Laubach, a member of the No. 1 Seasiders, leads the Pac West in hitting percentage (.471).

VULCANS RANKED 14TH: The University of Hawaii-Hilo men's cross-country team moved up 10 spots to 14th in the NCAA Division II poll.

In the West Region, the Vulcans remain second behind UC-Davis, which is ranked 10th in the nation.

The Vulcans host the Hilo Invitational tomorrow at 8 a.m. at the UHH Athletic Complex. Competing are Brigham Young-Hawaii, Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific.

WAHINE TEE OFF AT OREGON: In its second fall tournament, the Hawaii Wahine golf team heads to Oregon to compete in the Northwest Invitational, tomorrow through Monday.

BOOSTER CLUB FOR KEIKI: The University of Hawaii Marketing Office, in conjunction with the UH sports programs, is starting the Jr. Rainbow Booster Club for children from K-8 grades.

Membership includes an ID card, quarterly newsletter and free admission to women's basketball games. Each member will also have a chance to be a team ball person. Applications are available at Bank of Hawaii, Local Motion stores and Zippy's Restaurants. For information, call the UH Marketing Office at 956-9475.

KANEOHE TURKEY TROT: The 21st annual Turkey Trot will be held Nov. 17 at the Kaneohe Community Park. Festivities and registration begin at 5 p.m.; race begins at 5:30 p.m.

SCCA RACES: The local chapter of the Sports Car Club of America will hold a Solo II, or Autocross, event at Barbers Point Naval Air Station tomorrow starting at 10 a.m. Participation is open to the public. Cost to drive is $15 and pit passes are $3 per person.

A Solo I, or wheel-to-wheel, event takes place at Hawaii Raceway Park on Nov. 22 at 8 a.m. Due to the higher rate of speed for this race, drivers must be licensed by the SCCA and fees are $195. For information, call Ed Kemper at 524-0330 or Lindsay Akamu at 595-3595.
