Celebrating moon cakes
and the Monkey King

China, China, China. China always makes the news. Now it's Taiwan's turn to shine.

The Taiwanese Association of America's Hawaii chapter invites all to attend its first Taiwanese Cultural Festival Sunday. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Ala Moana Beach Park's McCoy Pavilion.

Featured will be performances of indigenous dance and song from 11:30 a.m. and puppet show presentations of "Monkey King" by Taiwan's premier puppet master, Lee Tien-Lu, at 1:30 and 3 p.m.

Displays will highlight Taiwan history, art work, geography, architecture and dress.

There will also be demonstrations of calligraphy, paper crane-making and tea-drinking ceremonies.

Moon cakes, shave ice and Taiwanese foods will be sold. Otherwise, admission to the festival is free.

A full-length I Wan-Ran puppet show, "A Chance Encounter Leads to Marriage," will also take place 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the University of Hawaii's Orvis Auditorium. Admission is $10.
