Hockey leaves ’em
full of smiles

Mug shot WAIKIKI Prince Hotel Manager Ted McAneeley, a former National Hockey League player who speaks Japanese, departed for Japan this week to lay the groundwork for two games on Oct. 10 and 11 between the NHL's San Jose Sharks and Calgary Flames. Meeting Ted at the Prince's successful Mushroom Mania III Tuesday, Katie Doyle revealed that she was a goalie for the Bergen Mall, N.J., ice hockey team when she was in her teens. Despite playing goalie in the rough sport, Katie was happy to say she still has all of her teeth. Ted, with a smile, says he does not ... Kona Mushrooms' colorfully clad Dennis Federico provides mushrooms for the Mania's top chefs and celebrity cooks. Dennis brings back memories of Sonny Bono when he had Cher. Dennis said he is a fun guy, prompting witty Myra Brandt to question the mushroom guru whether he said fungi or fun guy. Fun guy he is ...

Schuler turns 60

"IT'S like (eating) a bag of prunes -- you know something is coming but don't know when," said Jim Schuler when 90 people yelled, "surprise," as he walked into the First Hawaiian Bankers Club dining room Wednesday, a day before his 60th birthday. FHB Prez Jack Tsui conned the Schuler Homes boss into going upstairs to talk business. FHB Chairman Walter Dods helped surprise Schuler. Party highlights included Frank DeLima's jokes. Carole Kai and others paid tribute to Schuler. Dance music was by singer Sonya Mendez, keyboarder Clyde Pound, drummer-singer Alwyn Erub and bassist Bryan Matson. Mike Jones, married to Schuler's daughter, Pam, emceed. Schuler's wife, Patti, planned the party with help from Eric Lasso, Carole Brooks, Mary Flood and Joanne Halsey ...

CRAZY Shirts' Rick Ralston took wife, Michelle, to the Bali for a birthday dinner last week and tried to convince her that the weekly Friday night fireworks display was just for her. Helping Michelle celebrate were Carolyn Bosanko, Joannie Chang, Jean Dickinson, Stuart MacKenzie and Greg Romine... The talent of Matt Catingub was overpowering at the Concert Hall last weekend. The Honolulu Symphony's pops conductor not only led the band, he sang, played piano and sax and did arrangements. Maureen McGovern was the main attraction, but for me Matt was the star, although he talked too much about his CDs...

MAUI surfer Bryden Lando, 17, has been selected in a national search to be Chanel's face for Allure men's fragrance. Allure will be launched here during the French Festival, Nov. 13-14 at Chanel. The festival runs Nov. 7-22 around town. It offers French culture, food, fashions and products... Palomino chef Fred DeAngelo was selected by the HVCB to make a four-day tour of Canada to promote Hawaii products and tourism. DeAngelo, a Kamehameha grad, departed this week...
