Hawaii-born sumo grand champion Akebono was married
today in a gala wedding staged at a posh Tokyo hotel for a
national television audience. Above, Akebono, 29, holds his
4-1/2-month-old daughter, Reina, as his American-Japanese
wife, Christine Reiko Kalina, 27, looks on. Among the guests
at the wedding, below, was U.S. Ambassador to Japan Tom Foley.
The couple, who first met in 1988, announced their engagement
in February when Kalina was five months pregnant. Kalina
herself was born in Japan to an American serviceman
and his Japanese spouse.
