WAC defectors pick new name

Associated Press

ALBUQUERQUE -- The eight schools leaving the Western Athletic Conference could call their new conference the Mountain West.

Col. Hans Mueh, the Air Force Academy's representative on the transition committee, said Mountain West was a narrow winner in research done for the new league. Mueh told the Albuquerque Journal an announcement of the name is likely soon.

The eight schools announced in May they would form their own league, starting next season.

Those schools include New Mexico, Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming.
