Cover shot shocks ad man
IT'S a pity we don't have a photo to show how far ad man Tom Sellers' jaw dropped when he and wife Sherri arrived home from a vacation in France and found the new Honolulu magazine on his coffee table along with unanswered mail. It was a spectacular photo of his unique home in Kaneohe, and while he knew the spread was coming out in October, he wasn't ready for the photo he saw. Seems when photographer Marc Shecter was shooting the home, Tom whimsically asked if he could take a shot of him in the buff with his back to the camera and posterior visible through the balcony railing. Shecter did as he asked, and you can imagine Sellers' surprise when he picked up his magazine and saw that very shot. Seems Honolulu art director Michel Le had seen the photo and decided to have some fun. He made up a realistic looking cover with the derriere shot and a headline reading, "Full Moon over Kaneohe Bay." The altered magazine even had the UPC code and address label on it and was delivered to the house. Let's say it was a horrific moment for Sellers before he figured out what had happened. It was the only magazine with that photo ...
ON Sunday, David Paul presents another Full Moon Concert at his Diamond Head Grill at 8:30 p.m. The musical entertainment that night, oddly enough, is Hapa. Shouldn't they appear at a "Half Moon Concert?"... Audition notices are out for Kumu Kahua's January production, Sean T.C. O'Malley's "Island Skin Songs." And perhaps true to the title, the notices stated that "some scenes require partial nudity."...
Go East, young man
EVER get the idea the entire hotel industry is in an eastbound mode? William Sayce, most recently G.M. of the Pan Pacific Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has arrived on the Big Isle to be new G.M. of the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows. He's replacing Don Dickhens, who's been promoted to senior V.P. of Business Development for Pan Pacific, and who'll be headquartered in San Francisco. This move comes on the heels of the Kahala Mandarin's Barnard Agache resigning after just four months on the job as G.M. to take over as regional V.P. for Westin Hotels in Eastern Canada, headquartered in his hometown of Toronto. His replacement at Kahala is Jan Goessing, who's been G.M. of the Jakarta Mandarin...
AS we were sitting down to dinner at the conclusion of Yom Kippur, the holiest of Jewish holidays when the faithful fast for 24 hours, Irishman Dick Barry asked, "You know what Yom Kippur is called in New York, don't you?" I allowed that I didn't. "The Feast of Immediate Seating," came the reply. Right this way, your table's waiting... At Print Media Expo '98, Hagadone Printing Co. featured a "sticky wall." That's where you don a Velcro suit, jump on an inflated mattress and stick to the wall in whatever position you hit it. When one-time politician Fred Hemmings was asked if he'd like to try it, he quipped, "Why not? I'm always up against a wall anyway."...
Garth's coming to town
SORRY, all you country music fans, but the headline doesn't refer to Garth Brooks. It's Jennie Garth of "Beverly Hills 90210." Lee Hacohen of KHON-TV is making plans for her arrival and a party is in the works at Planet Hollywood on Oct. 17. Last year, you may recall, Brian Austin Green was in town doing the fall promo appearance and had a great time on Oahu. He even left with a new tattoo: "Green" written in Japanese characters on his chest. The big question now is will Jennie follow suit? Don't bank on it...
