Early schedule will

toughen up Wahine
Star-BulletinThe Hawaii women's basketball team will host seven schools that competed in the 1998 NCAA women's tournament in preseason tournaments at the Stan Sheriff Center.
"It's by design. We try to get the best schedule we can," Wahine head coach Vince Goo said.
"We're a relatively young team with only one senior. We might as well get them in there and see what they can do. I think it is one of our strongest nonconference schedules."
The Wahine open the 1998-99 season against Minnesota Nov. 20 in the Hawaiian Regent Classic. Games against NCAA participants Massachusetts and Kansas follow the next two days.
Four more NCAA tourney teams, North Carolina, Louisville, Nebraska and UCLA, appear in the Rainbow Wahine Classic, Nov. 27-29, with Louisville in the UH bracket.
The Ala Moana Hotel Paradise Classic (Dec. 21-23) has tournament tested Texas Tech along with James Madison and Loyola Marymount.
Hawaii's Western Athletic Conference schedule includes home and away games with New Mexico and Utah, both NCAA participants. And, the Lobos return most of their players who shocked the Wahine in the first round of the WAC playoffs last March.
The Wahine will be on mainland regional television twice, Jan. 17 at Utah and Feb. 7 at New Mexico. The majority of UH's home games will be shown on KFVE.
In player news, Goo said point guard Maj Forsberg has been granted another year of eligibility by the NCAA. She will be a junior this season.
Forsberg played some basketball in Denmark after graduating from high school in what Goo termed "a Koko Head District Park League." Because of this, UH played it safe and counted that as a year of eligibility, but, on appeal, the NCAA ruled otherwise.
Also, incoming guard Kate McMeeken-Ruscoe from New Zealand has been cleared by the NCAA Clearing House.
