WAC breakaways interview
commissioner candidates

Rocky Mountain News

The Western Athletic Conference's breakaway schools could have a new leader and a new identity by next week.

The nascent league's transition committee will begin interviewing five candidates today in Las Vegas for its first permanent commissioner.

The sessions at the MGM Grand Hotel will include talks with:

Bullet Tom Jernstedt, an assistant executive director of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Bullet Dave Maggard, a former athletic director at the universities of Miami and California.

Bullet Tim Weiberg, an assistant commissioner of the Big Ten Conference.

Bullet Craig Thompson, commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference.

Bullet Mark Kidd, an executive with Host Communication, a marketing arm of the NCAA.

The committee representing the WAC breakaway schools might pare the candidates to three for submission to the presidents of Colorado State, Air Force, Wyoming, Utah, Brigham Young, New Mexico, San Diego State and Nevada-Las Vegas. A decision could come as early as this weekend or as late as mid-October.

The circuit also could be known as the Mountain West Conference by this weekend.
