'SWING' time at the Royal

Dance fans, it's time to don your zoot suits and "SWING" again, 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel Monarch Room.

This "Let's Dance" presentation features music of the big-band era performed by Willie Barton and his orchestra, Jan Brenner, George Chun, Alfredo Romero, Al Waterson and Sonny Maguire.

"SWING" tickets are $12.50 and are available at the Royal Hawaiian service desk, Tower Records in Kahala and Pearl Kai, and Tower Video on Keeaumoku Street. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii. Call 923-7311.

OKTOBERFEST

Bullet Two new lagers: This month Gordon Biersch celebrates the German holiday with traditional Oktoberfest cuisine and the addition of two brews--the Wisenhelles and Marzen. Beginning tonight, enjoy one-liter tankards for $10 and speciality 1/2-liter tankards of Wisenhelles for $7.50. Also, from tonight through Saturday, the restaurant will have lederhosen-clad waitstaff and music by oompah bands to create atmosphere. For reservations, call 599-4877.

Bullet Alfred's: Diners have more dishes to choose from at Alfred's beginning today and continuing through Oct. 10. In addition to Alfred's main menu, Chef Vollenweider is adding Oktoberfest morsels to his lunch and dinner menus. Lunch features daily German specials while dinner has a set menu that includes geraucherten schwarzwalder-schinken (smoked blackforest ham with rye bread and pickles); tartar beef steak; wiener schnitzel; eis meringues mit schlagsahne (meringues filled with ice cream and topped with freshly whipped cream) and apfelstrudel (apple strudel with vanilla sauce), just to name a few. Bullet Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center: Munch on pretzels, dance to a live "oompah band" and sample German beers and sausages, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday in the Fountain Courtyard. Admission is free but there is a fee for food and beverages. For information, call 922-2299.
