hoops tourCarter left Monday for a week of exhibition games against European and Asian teams in Beirut and surrounding cities. The current NBA lockout has put Carter's NBA hopes on hold but his agent, Bill Duffy, is negotiating with several teams in Europe.
Last week, Carter was the fifth overall pick in the CBA draft by the Yakima (Wash.) Sun Kings. It appears doubtful he will sign with the CBA team.
WAHINE MOVE UP: The Hawaii women's volleyball team was ranked No. 10 this week's in the USA Today/AVCA coaches poll, up a spot from last week.
The Wahine (9-1) earned 967 points. Also in the rankings from the WAC are No. 5 Brigham Young and Fresno State, debuting at 24th.
Penn State remains the No. 1 team followed by Long Beach State and Nebraska.
Hawaii is up to No. 8 in the Volleyball magazine rankings.
NISSAN UPS XTERRA PURSE: A Nissan XTERRA bonus has increased the winnings for the first man and woman to finish the Oct. 11 Wailea, Maui, event from $3,000 to $6,000 while boosting the total pro purse to $37,000.
XTERRA consists of a 1.5-kilometer swim in Wailea Bay, a 30K mountain bike ride and an 11K trail run.
It will be televised on ESPN.
UH HARRIERS OFF AND RUNNING: The Hawaii women's cross country team will compete Saturday at the 24th Willamette Invitational, a 5-kilometer event hosted by Willamette (Ore.) University.
This is the largest cross country meet in the west with 37 teams and some 800 runners competing. The Wahine are led by freshman Jodi Enomoto, a Mililani High product, who has placed in the top three in each of the team's four races.
TATEYAMA AT LINFIELD: Kaimuki High grad Denise Tateyama, a freshman defensive specialist, had 22 digs last week to help the Linfield College women's volleyball team to three victories.
The Wildcats are 7-5 and on a five-match winning streak.
