Olympic theme
for Ihilani affair

Former Olympic swimming champions Mark Spitz, Debbie Meyer and Matt Biondi, and Olympic archery gold medalist Justin Huish are scheduled to take part in a "Diamonds and Gold" theme dinner, auction and dance on Oct. 3 to mark the fifth anniversary of the Ihilani Resort & Spa opening and to raise funds for Hawaii Special Olympics and other Olympics-related ventures.

Also appearing will be Bud Greenspan, the acclaimed director of films chronicling the Olympics, who will share one of his films.

Among the items to be auctioned are a pair of boxing gloves autographed by Muhammad Ali, an autographed pair of Kristi Yamaguchi's ice skates and an official Olympic torch carried en route to the Atlanta Games in '96.

FOOTBALL EXPRESS BUSES TO ROLL: TheBus' Aloha Stadium UH Football Express will provide service for the rest of Hawaii's home football games this season, starting with Saturday's game against Arkansas State.

Buses will run from Windward and East Honolulu areas, including Hawaii Kai, Kahala, Kaimuki, UH, Waikiki and Ala Moana Center. The fare is $2 each way (no change given). No passes will be accepted and no transfers will be given or accepted. For details on routes and times, call 848-5555.

NEW TROPHY FOR MOANALUA WOMEN: Gov. Ben Cayetano will present the Moanalua Golf Club's Women's Division with a new perpetual trophy Sunday at 8:30 a.m. at the club.

The governor has proclaimed this year to be the centennial of golf in Hawaii, based on the Moanalua Course's beginnings in 1898.

The Moanalua Women's Invitational began in 1948 and the first perpetual trophy was donated by legendary Hawaii golfer Francis I'i Brown. It bears his name and the names of the tournament champions but after 50 years, the trophy can hold no more names. Thus, the presentation of a new trophy by Gov. Cayetano.

CHAMINADE WINS VOLLEYBALL MATCH: Joan Lilio had 23 kills and 12 digs, leading Chaminade to a 15-8, 15-2, 15-6 victory over Montana State-Billings Wednesday night in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at McCabe Gym.

The victory was the fourth for the Silverswords against nine losses. They split this week's two-match series with Montana State-Billings, which is 8-9.

MINI-GOLF TOURNAMENT: The World Youth Network will hold its first World Mini-Golf Tourney, a fund-raising event, Nov. 21 at the Bayview mini golf courses in Kaneohe.

Tee times are 9 and 10:30 a.m.

World Youth Network Hawaii is a nonprofit organization serving youth in the community through a Life Skills curriculum.

WILDERNESS BIKE TREK: The Waimea Wilderness Trek, a bike ride with experienced guides, will take place at Waimea Valley Adventure Park tomorrow from 8 a.m. to noon.

The goal of the ride is to teach the preservation of Hawaii's trails through responsible riding. There will be experienced guides to teach basic off-road riding techniques, handling skills, trail-side First Aid, how to fix a flat, and more.
