Folio '94
"Path of a Summer Tornado" by Michael Mullin
is part of Folio's final issue.

It’s a grand finale for
the Folio quarterly

The newest edition of the local art quarterly Folio '94 is out, but rather than being a cause for celebration, the late-September release of the August issue marks closure for the "portable gallery" and its creators Maggie Yee and Brian Garvey.

The issue took a little longer to produce than most because the couple moved to Santa Cruz, Calif., in June. Artists submitted their work for the last issue through the U.S. mail. Finishing the issue was something Yee said she owed to her contributors after four years of struggling to keep the limited-edition quarterly alive.

Folio '94 began as a labor of love, intended to encourage expression and dialogue between artists and patrons. Creative types would submit 100 pieces of art work or prose which was then bound with others' work, and sold through art galleries and museum shops. Over Folio's four-year run, its circle of contributors expanded to include artists from other states, but Yee said, "It was still a struggle to make it a happening, accepted kind of medium, and how long can someone without any funding continue to do that? I feel sad and bummed out that Folio can't continue. Realistically, I feel we need to go on to something else."

Yee, who can start her job search now that Folio is put to bed, said that after getting settled she hopes to explore painting in depth. She started to make progress while in Hawaii after spending most of her career as a graphic artist. She also wants to explore the realm of handmade books, a merging of the 'zine and craft scene, which has grown over the past 10 years.

"When I saw that I said, 'Wow! I didn't know (that with Folio) I was part of something like that."

She left Hawaii with no regrets. "I've come away with more than I expected. I left with a lot of learning experience and a lot of good relationships with the people I've met through Folio.

"For a short time we kept it alive and I think all the people involved can feel they helped to accomplish something in Hawaii that was difficult to do."

Copies of Folio's finale issue are available for $10 at the Contem-porary Museum gift shop and Borders, Ward Centre. It can also be ordered by writing: Foli '94 c/o Garvey/Yee, P.O. Box 1267, Soquel, CA 95073-1267.
