Brook takes a Lana turn

Mug shot THE girl with the 1940s look on the postcards advertising the Hawaii International Film Festival in November looks mighty familiar. The cards feature a poster called "The Dreamer" and show the young lady sitting atop some film canisters with a far-off look in her eyes as if imagining a meaningful movie moment. On closer examination, the young lady who did the modeling was none other than former Miss Universe, Brook Lee, who would have a been a knockout in Lana Turner days... The '98 Festival, incidentally, is Nov. 6-13 in Honolulu and Nov. 13-19 on the Big Island, Kauai, Maui, Molokai and Lanai...

WHEN Willie K was performing at Washington Place recently, he was strumming his guitar so enthusiastically, one of his hallmarks, that he broke a string. He scarcely missed a beat, launching into "Danny Boy," with Irish accent, while he changed strings. His partner, Amy Gilliom, says he surprised many a pub-goer on their recent trip to Chicago when he'd sing "Danny Boy," usually to a pleasantly surprised and confused crowd who couldn't quite picture him, with his beard, zoris and bandanna, as typical of the Irish tenor...

Truth Contest Hilton AND speaking of the Irish, Rabbi Avi Magid of Temple Emanu-El and his family spent part of the summer visiting sometime Hawaii resident Joey Silver at his estate in Ireland. The rabbi was so excited when he discovered that Waterford Crystal makes an entire Judaica line, that he brought home for his congregation a crystal kiddish (wine) cup which was used for the first time on Rosh Hashanah Eve. The Rabbi also got a laugh when he said he found proof of Hawaiians in Ireland -- everyone kept saying, "Erin, go brah."...

Fumin' in the Wind

THE 3,300 people who stood in line to get into the Bob Dylan concert were understandably miffed. There was only one main entrance (a second, largely unused, was for handicapped only) and the line was at least a quarter mile long. The reason for the lengthy admission process was doubtless the bag-searching, which has become something of an obsession in public venues. You'd think a simple "No Alcohol Allowed" sign would suffice. Still, those who went to the show loved all two hours of it (17 Dylan songs) and the people who were to have been seated on the grass chose to stand for the entire concert. Big question: Will a new album come out of this tour, especially since so many of his tunes have been totally reinterpreted?...

If it's Tuesday this must be Beloit: Artist Wyland, in the midst of his "50 States in 50 Days" tour to promote the Wyland Ocean Challenge of America, is in Wisconsin today after spending yesterday in Iowa. The challenge began in Hawaii Aug. 20. You can follow the tour on the Internet: http://www.wylandfoundation.org...

Stressed Eric

DESIGNER Eric Chandler simply must be planning to vote for Ben Cayetano for governor. To begin with, he received the "First Lady's Award for Best in Show" at the 12th annual Governor's Fashion Awards at the Hilton Hawaiian Village last week. This was the first such award, established this year by Vickie Cayetano. Two days later he got a proclamation from Gov. Cayetano recognizing his contributions to the fashion industry and design in Hawaii and Thursday has been proclaimed by the governor to be "Eric E. Chandler Day in Hawaii." This will come as a blow to Ray Sweeney of Sweeney Communications, who turns 60 on Thursday and who now may feel a "Tingle for Lingle."...
