Another round of
Clinton vs. Starr

President shouldn't be impeached

Shame, shame America. The Earth's most powerful nation is participating in the dirtiest sting operation ever, for all the world to see. To be conned and suckered in by the bookies (book peddlers) and stoolies (talk show and newscast participants) is humiliating.

The $44-million, 445-page gutter trash known as the Starr Report should have been contracted to porno and tabloid writers, thereby saving taxpayers millions of dollars.

It's devastating that so many honorable, well-meaning and devoted people were subjected to belittlement and embarrassment under the umbrella of "no one is above the law."

This investigation of Whitewater has brought the White House to the level of a whorehouse, with a madam, whores, pimps, stoolies, body guards and stalls to conduct the operation.

Impeachment? Never. This president, the best we've had in 50 years, must resign for the system to survive and to save the American people from drowning in this sleazy, slimy mess.

Richard Lee

Sex in the White House is not a private concern

The chief executive officer of the federal government was receiving oral sex in a federal office building, from a federal employee, protected by a federal guard, during the federal working day. Yet President Clinton and some government leaders have repeatedly claimed that this is a "private" affair.

Clinton and his friends must think like President Marcos and President Suharto -- if it belongs to the government, it automatically belongs to them.

America needs to clearly establish this line between public and private matters. Official lies, obstruction of justice and sex in government offices are federal business, not "private."

Congress should immediately verify the Starr Report and impeach Clinton. If Congress does not redraw this essential boundary, our dishonest leader's next step may be to transfer federal funds into his "private" bank account.

Starr's past statements on porn are ironic

"Public media should not contain explicit or implied descriptions of sex acts. Our society should be purged of the perverts who provide the media with pornographic material while pretending it has some redeeming social value under the public's 'right to know.' Pornography is pornography, regardless of the source."

-- Kenneth Starr, 1987 interview with Dianne Sawyer, "60 minutes"

Clinton's words on Nixon come back to haunt him

I thought readers might appreciate this quote, which was made during the infamous Watergate scandal:

"Yes, the president should resign. He has lied to the American people, time and time again, and betrayed their trust. He is no longer an effective leader. Since he has admitted guilt, there is no reason to put the American people through an impeachment. He will serve absolutely no purpose in finishing out his term; the only possible solution is for the president to save some dignity and resign."

-- William Jefferson Clinton, 1974

New balloting system disenfranchised voters

I went down to the polling place and cast my ballot, but it was rejected so my vote doesn't count. It's like I was living in a communist country or banana republic.

Never in 70 years of voting has my right to vote been denied. I demand an investigation.

Jack A. Fiero Sr.

Absentee voters aren't second-class citizens

Chief Elections Officer Dwayne Yoshina is wrong. There is no place in Hawaii law that allows for two classes of voters. He seems content with depriving absentee voters of the protections assured in the regular precincts on Election Day.

The tabulating machines have protections instituted with software to protect voter rights. Those machines should have been available in the absentee voting areas.

Yoshina is paid to assure elections that do not fail because of a lack of concern by officials charged with providing trustworthy vote-counting systems. And that is true of every ballot cast, absentee or on Election Day.

Lingle's victory signals triumph of common sense

Hawaii's message is loud and clear. Voter turnout for Mayor Lingle presignifies the upcoming result of the general election. We are ready to embrace our first ever woman governor!

All across the islands our neighbors are joining us, demanding common sense and credibility in our government. They are turning their backs on the long history of flawed policies that have given Hawaii the worst economy, the worst business climate, one of the worst school systems, the highest tax rates, the highest unemployment rates and the worst welfare in history.

Hawaii simply has had enough.

Real estate stats show Cayetano plan is working

Our residential real estate market is on an upturn. This shows that our economy is ready to round the corner, contrary to what the gubernatorial wannabes would have us believe.

Sure, our economy needs more help, but that is why Ben Cayetano has been making the hard decisions to diversify our economic base and put us on the right track for the long term.

In this election year, beware of those bearing short-term, glib solutions for complex problems.
