Wahine rally to beat Oregon
By Al Chase
Star-BulletinThe University of Hawaii women's soccer team found out what it was like to trail in a match for the first time this season.
An early goal by the University of Oregon's Chalise Baysa dampened Hawaii's initial enthusiasm and led to a bout of languid play by the Wahine that covered the next 25 minutes last night at Ala Wai Field.
Hawaii (4-0) finally regrouped for a 2-1 victory in the opener of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Shootout.
Senior midfielder Tricia Nishikawa helped get UH out of the doldrums with her second goal of the season.
"I was just following up a cross," Nishikawa said. "When I got there I thought the goalie had the ball, but it dropped behind her and I put my foot on it."
Nishikawa's 2-footer evened the score at 33:30 of the opening half.
Junior midfielder Kammie Aguada put UH ahead four minutes into the second half .
"I just saw the ball, thought to myself, 'shoot it, you've got nothing to lose,' " said Aguada, an Iolani School graduate who transferred to UH after playing two years for New Mexico Highlands.
Oregon outshot Hawaii, 15-10, and forced more corner kicks, 7-3.
UH goalie Amanda Paterson recorded five saves in the second half. The final few minutes in front of the senior from Australia were hectic as Wahine defenders repelled several dangerous threats by the Ducks (3-2).
The Wahine play the University of San Diego tomorrow at 5 p.m. at Ala Wai Field.
