Any questions?

Many of the 5,256 spectators who went to Aloha Stadium last night in hopes of seeing the Oahu Interscholastic Association's most intense rivalry came away with something completely different:

A sense of how deep and powerful the Red Raiders are this season.

Recent graduates of the White Conference, they have outscored defending Red Conference champion Campbell and two-time defending league champion Waianae by a combined total of 102-14 this season.

Kahuku appears on its way to the Red Conference title and league championship. It plays at Leilehua next week, then closes out its conference schedule with games against Farrington and Waipahu. But those three teams don't match up with the Red Raiders.

Truth Contest Vaima Kahuku (3-0 conference, 5-0 overall) hit the previously unbeaten Seariders (2-1 conference, 4-1 overall) hard and early on both sides of the ball and didn't let them regroup until it was too late.

The Red Raiders built a 35-0 lead in the first half despite sitting out leading rusher, Talamoni Talamoni, until the last four minutes of the half for disciplinary reasons.

Talamoni finished with 44 yards and a touchdown on six carries.

"We have the offensive line and I'm happy with all of our running backs," said Kahuku head coach Siuaki Livai.

bullet Kala Latuselu scored on a 7-yard run with 4:33 left in the first quarter after defensive end Puna Vendiola recovered a Waianae fumble.

bullet Andreas Manumaleuna, a 5-foot-7, 225-pounder, maintained his balance despite being hit three times to score on a 5-yard run with 9:28 left in the half.

bullet Five minutes later, Talamoni broke a tackle and scored on a 3-yard run.

Starting quarterback Wayne Fonoimoana had 190 yards of total offense, rushing for 74 yards and a touchdown and throwing for 116 yards and a TD.

Fonoimoana opened the scoring for Kahuku with a 42-yard run around the left side with 6:10 left in the first quarter.

He hooked up with Thomas Thompson on a 79-yard touchdown pass play with 1:14 left in the half. That touchdown and another in the last 26 seconds of the game came after interceptions.

Hyrum Peters' interception set up Thompson's score and Bryson Au's interception set up a 26-yard TD pass from Orlando Wong to Diamond Kaaihue in the final minute of the game.

The Red Raiders' defense denied the Seariders a first down until Joe Valdez ran 38 yards to the Kahuku 19 with four minutes left in the half. But the Seariders failed to score on the drive.

"We had some breakdowns early in the game that added to our problems," Waianae head coach Leo Taaca said. "We had a lot of mistakes. We're not a good team yet, but we will get better."

Kahuku lineman Pupi Toelupe, who was in on four of the team's six sacks, said he and his defensive linemates took advantage of their quickness.

Duane Miller led Waianae with 114 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.
