Filled to bursting with his love of gymnastics last Saturday, Quincy Solano wanted the world to know it -- so he exploded onto Aloha Stadium's football field at halftime with a series of back-flips. When flipping out is good
And he practically overshadowed the band mates who streamed onto the field after him.
"He's a really fun guy," said Mililani High Band Director Fred Murphy, "the kind you want to stay in band forever. He has talent that makes him exceptional."
An alto saxophonist, Solano said he enjoys his band gig, but it's gymnastics that has a hold on his heart. "It's the most exciting thing." The art of competition spurs his creative juices and helps him win, he said.
Solano practices at least four times a day, anywhere and anytime. Following regular practice, he may be found tumbling in his yard or teaching his little sister trade tricks. Named a state-level champion last month, he placed first in several events at the Western regional competition in Arizona soon after. His goal is to make the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team. "I have a lot of power," he said. "I can tumble high, and I have a lot of speed."
Besides gymnastics, Solano enjoys the piano, reading health books and more sports. A 3.8 GPA student, member of the school diving team and track team candidate, Solano is a busy man with plans -- which probably includes more back-flips for next week's homecoming game.
