Hydrofest coming
to Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor once again will host the JN Automotive Hydrofest for high-speed racing boats Oct. 16-18 off Ford Island.

The event is open to the public from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 16 (free admission) and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 17 and 18 (admission $2 for adults, $1 for military ID, free for ages 12 and under).

In addition to the racing competition, there will be E.K. Fernandez carnival rides and live entertainment.

HYDROFEST GOLF DAY: The fourth annual Hydrofest Golf Tournament, bringing together drivers and owners of the Unlimited Hydroplane Racing Series along with military and civilian golfers, will be held on Oct. 13 at the Navy-Marine course.

The tournament, which last year drew a field of 140 and raised more than $15,000 for the Pearl Harbor Morale Welfare and Recreation Fund, is presented by the 1998 JN Automotive Hydrofest, AT&T Hawaii, Anheuser-Busch Sales of Hawaii, Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Hawaii and Hooters of Hawaii.

WAHINE STAY AT 13TH: Three wins had no effect on the ranking of the University of Hawaii women's volleyball team.

The Wahine stayed at No. 13 in the AVCA/USA Today Top 25 poll released yesterday. Hawaii (5-1) also kept the No. 14 spot in Volleyball magazine's rankings.

Penn State remained the top-ranked team in the coaches' poll followed by Long Beach State, Nebraska, UC Santa Barbara and Southern Cal. Brigham Young, the only other ranked WAC team, is No. 6.

Hawaii puts its 49-match conference winning streak on the line Friday night in its WAC opener against San Diego State (2-7) at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Wahine take on No. 8 Pacific (7-0) in a nonconference match Saturday.

MOLMEN, ODRE RUN TO THE SUN: akabill Molmen, a 54-year-old ultra runner from Honolulu, won the 21st Haleakala Run to the Sun last weekend in 6 hours, 11 minutes and 22 seconds.

Jackie Odre of Maui was the first woman finisher in 6:35.34.

Molmen beat out Jeff Huff (6:22.31) and Gino Merez (6:26.59) in the men's elite field. Odre outran Collette Haney (7:22.28) and Patricia Carroll (7:38.15) for women's elite honors.

NEW UNIVERSITY HIGH COACHES: Tony McInerny has been named head volleyball coach at University High School, succeeding Walter Quitan, who becomes the head boys' varsity basketball coach.

McInerny, who played volleyball at Punahou and San Diego State, has been a girls' varsity assistant coach at University High for the past two years.

Quitan, who was an assistant basketball coach as well as the volleyball head coach, takes over the basketball program from Danny Alvarez, who is stepping down to pursue his masters degree at the University of Hawaii.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GOLFERS: Big Island junior golfers Craig Nishina and Chris Igawa have received academic sholarships to the University of Washington and the University of Missouri-Kansas City , respectively, as part of the Big Island Candies Foundation Scholarship Program.

Scholarship funds were raised from the proceeds of the recent Hapuna Roundup Invitational Pro-Am.
