Birthday bash
Oct. 14

All kids born Oct. 14, 1988, on Maui, are invited to a joint 10th birthday celebration with Hali'imaile General Store, which opened for business on that date.

"We're hoping to find all the kids born on Maui the same day we opened the restaurant so we can have them and their families as guests of honor that night," says Hali'imaile owner and chef Beverly Gannon. "We haven't had any luck going through 'regular channels' and so we're hoping they -- or their parents actually -- will contact us."

The number to call is (808) 572-2666.

Walk to control diabetes

Walking is one of the ways a person with diabetes can control the condition and taking part in the Fifth Annual Walk to Cure Diabetes Nov. 14 will help others become more aware of the disorder as well as raise money to find a cure.

The walk is sponsored by the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, which tomorrow launches its campaign with a lunch at the Governor's Mansion.

The focus of this year's project is the role family members can play in managing diabetes, says Majken Mechling, executive director of the foundation.

"Often people with diabetes face a lonely struggle to live within the many constraints of their disease. Strong positive family support can make a tremendous difference," he says.

Last year, 2,000 walkers in Hawaii raised more than $225,000. Money is raised by walkers asking friends, relatives and co-workers to sponsor them. Companies may participate by organizing teams of employees.

All walkers raising $75 or more will receive a walk T-shirt. Those raising $150 and more will receive additional prizes.

The 2.5-mile walk -- twice around Kapiolani Park -- will begin at the park bandstand at 8 a.m. For registration information call 988-1000.
