


Salud stops Vazquez in

Forum main eventINGLEWOOD, Calif. - Jesus Salud, a former WBA champion and Hawaii resident, stopped David Vazquez in the second round of a super bantamweight fight last night at the Forum.
Vazquez was floored midway through the second round by a hard right by Salud, but got right back up. After receiving an eight count, Vazquez was allowed to continue until referee Lou Filippo stopped the fight at 2:28.
Salud, 35, who now lives in San Diego, improved to 58-9 with 35 knockouts. Vazquez, 21, of Blythe, Calif., dropped to 13-4-2 with eight knockouts.
Salud weighed 124 pounds and Vazquez was 122.
The Hawaii Pacific University men's soccer team was beaten for the first time this season yesterday in Arcata, Calif., bowing to Simon Fraser of British Columbia, 5-2. First soccer loss for HPU
Cenan Senyuva and Robert Meierdiercks scored for the Sea Warriors, who had won their first three games.
They beat Montana State-Billings, 2-1, Sunday at Arcata in their PacWest Conference debut as Cesar Jube scored the 48th and 49th goals of his HPU career.
BOWL TICKETS IN MAIL: Tickets have been mailed to annual subscribers for the Jeep Aloha Bowl/Jeep Oahu Bowl Christmas Day doubleheader and tickets for the Hooters Hula Bowl Maui will be sent to annual subscribers by the end of September, Bowl Games of Hawaii announced.
Special collectors' edition tickets for the post-Hula Bowl game concert starring LeAnn Rimes will be sent separately for those who have bought the concert only.
OLYMPIC RECEPTION: Majell Hind, the Australian Consul in Honolulu, will host a reception for about 50 people - including several former Olympians from Hawaii - at his residence tonight to mark the continuing countdown to the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
Among the special guests will be Tommy Kono and Peter George, weightlifting gold and silver medalists, respectively, at the 1956 Games in Melbourne, Australia; William Woolsey, a swimming silver medalist at Melbourne, and Aileen Soule, who won a diving gold medal at the age of 14 in the 1920 Olympics at Antwerp, Belgium.
KAILUA FUN RUN: The Friends of Kailua High School are sponsoring a 5-kilometer fun run/walk/in-line skate on Oct. 11 beginning at 6:45 a.m. at the school gym.
Net proceeds from the event will go the Kailua High School Computer Academy.
