Goo’s new contract
approved

The executive committee of the University of Hawaii Board of Regents approved a new contact for Wahine head basketball coach Vince Goo yesterday at its monthly meeting in Hilo.

The final approval won't take place until Oct. 9 on Kauai when the full board acts on all personnel matters. But, that is just a formality at this point.

Jim Manke, vice president for university relations, said this is normal procedure for the board unless there is some urgency. If there had been any problems or questions, then approval would not have been forthcoming from the executive committee.

Following university policy in personnel matters, contract details were not available.

Assistant athletic director for women's and Olympic sports, Marilyn Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano said the contract runs through April 30, 2003.

"I am pleased that negotiations ended positively," Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano said. "I'm happy that coach Goo has a five-year contract with a competitive salary. Facts and success speak louder than anything else."

Although Goo, who is on a 13-day mainland recruiting trip, acknowledged there was one more step in the process and didn't want to comment too much, he did say the approval came at a critical time.

"We've had some good feelings from a while back (regarding a new contract)," Goo said.

"We mentioned it on our home visits. At least they (recruits) know the university is putting some faith in the present coaching staff and there is longevity and that helps when you recruit.

"If the coaching staff is part of the priority in (recruits) making a decision, then it's a positive for our recruiting."

Goo and associate head coach George Wolfe will be making 12 home visits on this recruiting trip. They are allowed to bring 12 recruits in for campus visits during the year and will offer trips to all 12 if the home visits are positive.
