Imua Challenge
Star-BulletinIt was just what the doctor ordered. Some rest and relaxation.
Banged up after an intense tournament last weekend, the University of Hawaii women's volleyball team was looking for a short vacation. Last night it came in the form of a cruise as the No. 13 Wahine put away Bradley, 15-2, 15-5, 15-6, in 72 minutes at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The victory was Hawaii's 13th in a row in the Aston's Imua Challenge. The Wahine put that streak on the line tonight against Baylor, an 11-15, 15-11, 15-6, 16-14 winner over Arizona State in last night's opener.
In the UH-Bradley match, there was little suspense for one of the smallest night crowds (3,901) in the arena's history. The biggest questions were would Hawaii set a new service ace record (the Wahine had 10, three short of tying the eight-year-old mark), and how well would sophomore setter Tehani Miyashiro and freshman blocker Adrianne Bradley fare (just fine according to UH coach Dave Shoji).
"Just getting to play is a natural high," said Bradley, who saw limited action in the back row in one match last week. "It felt good out there, getting to play all the way around. Tehani and I had that connection. It was awesome."
Bradley -- the Wahine player -- was effective during her limited appearance, hitting .667 with four kills on six swings and no errors.
Bradley -- the Wahine opponent -- was less successful. Punahou School product Lindsay Chang had eight of her team's 27 kills as the Braves hit .074 for the night.
"Lindsay hit the ball hard every time and was real smart in her placement," said Braves' teammate Erika Nash, a UH Lab School graduate and daughter of Rainbow associate head basketball coach Bob Nash. "I was real excited to play here and I never realized how loud it was on the court. I should have played better.

UH's Tehani Miyashiro records a block last night.
"What I think we saw was what we needed to do to be one of the top teams. Playing UH . . . That is what we need to work for. That is how we want to be.""Hawaii is big and strong and experienced," Bradley coach Scott Luster said. "Hawaii is a Top-5 program with an established winning tradition. We're trying to establish some kind of tradition at Bradley.
"We came in on purpose not talking about Hawaii. We think we'll match up better with the other two teams in the tournament."
Shoji expects a better matchup with Baylor tonight.
"Baylor can give us some problems with the type of plays they run," he said. "All of their players hit all of their sets. We need to figure out what they're doing.
"Tonight we had fun. We've been pretty loose all week. We're so banged up that we didn't need a real, real competitive match. We wanted to cruise and rest some people."
Seeing limited action last night was freshman middle Veronica Lima, who has been bothered by back problems since summer. She had two kills and two block assists before leaving.
Jessica Sudduth (11 kills, .409) and Heather Bown (10 kills, .474) led the Wahine attack. Hawaii outblocked Bradley, 9-3.
n Baylor 3, ASU 1: The Bears wear green. They are sponsored by Asics. Their home dome, the Ferrell Center, is a twin of the Sheriff Center.
Little wonder Baylor felt right at home against Arizona State.
The Bears erased a 14-10 deficit in Game 4, holding off two game points en route to closing out the match with a 6-0 run.
"We made it a little exciting for the people coming in (for the second match)," Bears coach Brian Hosfeld said. "We're a young team, and once we settle down and run our offense, I think we'll be a team to reckon with.
Hosfeld, a former assistant at Long Beach State, coached three of the Wahine players at the club level: Jessica Sudduth, Heidi Ilustre and Heather Bown.
"Against Hawaii, we'll need to slow down their attack, serve well and get them out of their rhythm," he said. "They're big with good foot speed -- a coach's nightmare."
Baylor junior hitter Elisha Polk gave the Sun Devils nightmares. Polk finished with 22 kills, including six in Game 4.
Junior hitter Kia Young added 17 kills and eight block assists for Baylor. Amanda Burbridge led ASU with 20 kills.
NOTE: Junior transfer Shelly Kim, a defensive specialist, will be eligible to play tonight. She had to sit out four matches -- to make up for the four exhibition matches she played in last spring -- before being cleared to play for the Wahine.
