Altar carvings from East Java are among items at
Jeanne Marie Filbrandt's warehouse sale.

A taste of Indonesia
at the Cannery

For three months this year, Jeanne Marie Filbrandt combed the countries of Southeast Asia, Nepal and Tibet, looking for artifacts, crafts, furniture and other decorative items.

She brought back to Hawaii thousands of unusual pieces: carvings, statues, beds, armoires, chests, stepping stones, spears, bowls, pottery, baskets, purses, chairs, cabinets, screens, boxes, masks, wall panels, gates, vases.

Filbrandt, whose company is called Indo-Pacific Horizons, now has the items displayed for sale at Dole Cannery. Some are one-of-a-kind antiques priced in the thousands, but many sell for as little as $5.

She contracts artisans and crafters in Indonesia and other countries to create the artwork and fine crafts, or finds them in out-of-the-way shops. Much of the furniture is made from recycled wood, mainly teak taken from old furnishings and rebuilt for new ones.

This 36-inch-diameter snake basket was hand
woven in West Lombok, Indonesia.

Filbrandt usually holds these warehouse sales in Kona where she lives, but this year brought her items to Oahu. She selects each item herself and is eager to share every bit of information she has on a piece -- its history, who made it and how and what the materials are.

She treats customers as if the store were a gallery instead of a shop. "I'm happy just to have people come in and look. They don't have to buy something; as long as they have a good time, I'm happy," she says.

The sale will run through Oct. 5. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Information: 538-6053.
