A new approach to road trips may have begun to pay dividends for the University of Hawaii women's soccer team.

The Wahine (3-0) scored two second-half goals to defeat Southeastern Louisiana University (0-3), 2-0, at Hammond, La., yesterday in the opener of a three-game road trip.

Megan Lytle scored on a 25-yard free kick to break a scoreless tie at 74 minutes, 40 seconds. Six minutes later Nikki Kamakura took a pass from Miyashiro and found the corner of the goal from inside the penalty box.

"We played excellent defense although we were sluggish the first half," Tenzing said.

The Wahine limited the Lady Lions to just three shots on goal.

Truth Contest Waikele It's the first time since the program started in 1994 that UH has won three consecutive matches.

UH's historic lack of success on the mainland (12-31-2 in four seasons) left Hawaii coach Pinsoom Tenzing befuddled.

To reverse the road woes, he adopted a different approach. More attention is being paid to time organization for the team. Sightseeing and its educational benefits are reduced, eliminating sometimes long and perhaps unnecessary van rides.

With a squad dominated by freshmen and sophomores, Tenzing thinks this is a better way to keep the Wahine focused.

"The coaches are going to be a lot more strict on the road," co-captain Wendy Miyashiro said. "It's pretty much playing, practicing and study hall. That's it.

"And, we're going to the party city of the world (New Orleans). But, we're going to be in our rooms. I think that's where we belong. We're there to play."

"Being in a different environment, having no fans except a few parents, things seem to be against us," said senior midfielder Tui Moe. "You have to be very mentally tough to overcome those things."

The remaining road matches on this trip are against:

Bullet Tulane at New Orleans tomorrow: The Green Wave have 10 starters back from a 5-14-1 team in 1997.

Bullet Virginia Commonwealth at New Orleans Saturday: Seven starters are back for the Lady Rams who posted a 8-12-1 record in 1997.

DASHER HONORED: UH striker Dawn Dasher, who scored three goals and added an assist last weekend, was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
