Triple Crown of
Surfing adds
$1-million bonus prize

A $1-million bonus prize will be given to any surfer who wins all three events in the Vans G-Shock Triple Crown of Surfing, to be held Nov. 12 through Dec. 20.

The prize, being offered by Vans, Inc., G-Shock and Mountain Dew, is the largest in competitive surfing history and is in addition to the series' $350,000 cumulative purse.

NO MEDALS: Peter Newton, a former Honolulu resident and Hui Nalu paddler, and Kathy Colin of Kailua, paddled the U.S. team to six finals in the 29th World Canoe Championships in Szeged, Hungary.

Truth Contest Hilton Newton, a member of the Hawaii Canoe and Kayak Team, paired with Angel Perez of Miami in the K-2 200 meter and K-2 500 meter races for two fourth place finishes.

Newton and Perez were joined by fellow Hawaii Canoe and Kayak Team member Stein Jorgensen and John Mooney of Portland, Ore., for fifth and eighth places respectively in the K-4 200 meter and K-4 1000 meter races.

Colin, also a member of the Hawaii Canoe and Kayak Team, joined with Julia Sorzano for a seventh-place finish in the women's K-2 200 meter race.

Colin, Sorzano, Lia Rousset, and Tamara Jenkins teamed for a ninth- place finish in the women's K-4 200 meter race.

JIU-JITSU GOLD: Members of the Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy won seven gold medals, two silver and three bronze in a national tournament held Aug. 22-23 in Los Angeles.

Gold-medal winners were: Mike Cirivello (white belt, 182 pounds); Anthony Torres (white, 210), Shane Agena (blue, 134), Steve Hordinski (blue, 175), Jerel Tengan (blue, 120), Baret Yoshida (purple, 143-under 170 and 143-over 170).

SPORTS HALL OF FAME GOLF: A golf tournament to raise funds to establish a permanent display for the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame will be held Sept. 21 at the Waikele Golf Club.

Entry fee is $150 per player for the 3-person modified scramble event, which will have a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Deadline is Tuesday. Make checks payable to the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame and mail to 2440 Campus Road, Box 599, Honolulu, Hawaii 96822.

SPORTSPERSONS OF THE MONTH: Ernie Leskovitz, who won four events at the U.S. Masters Swimming Long Course Championships, and tennis player Jean Okada, who qualified for the main draw of the U.S. Open, have been named Sportspersons of the Month by the Honolulu Quarterback Club.
