Maui developer Everett Dowling today announced he will build 99 homes for native Hawaiians at the Waiehu Kou 2 project three miles north of Wailuku.

This is the first time the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands has teamed with a developer to build homes on Maui.

Logo "By teaming with developers to build well-planned subdivisions and homes, we hope to provide native Hawaiians not only with homes, but with strong, impressive communities," said Kali Watson, chairman of the Hawaiian Homes Commission.

The project will include 10 lots that can be used for self-help housing built by several families working under the supervision of a professional builder.

The Dowling homes will include four models with two, three and four bedrooms ranging from 960 to 1,440 square feet. Lot sizes average 8,000 square feet. The model prices start at $102,500, $120,000, $136,000 and $149,750.

Project realtors are James Ko-metani Inc. of Honolulu and Jo-seph Kealoha Inc. of Wailuku.

Native Hawaiians on the waiting list for Maui residential lots may apply for the homes. Informational meetings are scheduled for both Maui and Oahu: Saturday, 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the Kahului Elementary School cafeteria; Sunday, 2 p.m. at the Alvah A. Scott Elementary School cafeteria in Aiea; Tuesday, 7 p.m. at the Lincoln Elementary cafeteria, Honolulu; and Sept. 17, 6 p.m. at the Kamalii School cafeteria, Kihei.

The deadline for interested buyers to turn in response cards is Sept. 24. Lot selection is scheduled for early December. Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 1999 and occupancy will start in late 1999. The project site is just south of Waihee, close to Waiehu Beach and borders the Waiehu golf course.
